BMW, a German automaker, has verified suspicions that it will stop making two diesel engines.
Late last year, reports that the renowned three-liter, 400hp, quad-turbo six-cylinder diesel (B57s) engine will no longer be produced started to circulate on the German BMW news website, Bimmer Today.
I’m sorry to have to break it to you. But when BMW’s head of research and development Klaus Froelich spoke to Automotive News Europe earlier this week, the speculations were confirmed. There was no mention of the precise termination date of production.
While other automakers are moving away from gasoline and diesel, BMW is devoted to developing more effective engines.
Despite the industry tendency to forsake petrol- and diesel-burning powertrains, BMW has stated it is developing a new generation of internal combustion engines (ICE).
BMW Development Director Frank Weber stated the luxury automaker was continuing to develop six-cylinder and V8 engines but oddly left out four-cylinder engines in an interview with German journal Auto Motor und Sport.
To effectively reduce CO2 emissions in the passenger automobile sector globally, Weber told the news source, “we still need the state-of-the-art combustion engine for a few years.”
We are therefore developing a new generation of engines, including six- and eight-cylinder gasoline and diesel models.
Given that Mercedes-Benz and Audi, both owned by the Volkswagen Group, are concentrating on making the switch to entirely electric vehicles, BMW may be the last German automaker to offer a V8.
Evidence suggests that the upcoming BMW M5 will use a plug-in hybrid V8, similar to the recently announced XM, albeit this has not yet been confirmed.
Despite speculations to the contrary, Mercedes-AMG doesn’t seem to be giving up the V8 just yet.
In a recent interview with Road & Track, AMG CEO Philipp Schiemer stated, “I think over the next 10 years we will see the V8, for sure.
We have a lot of consumers who adore their vehicles, and I still believe that these customers will continue to purchase [V8] vehicles for a very long period.
Punch Group, a supplier to BMW notorious for acquiring underperforming auto manufacturing companies, recently disclosed to Automotive News Europe that it was attempting to redesign diesel engines so that they used hydrogen fuel instead.
The 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel V8 from General Motors is now being converted by the business to absorb hydrogen, although CEO Guido Dumarey hinted that additional engine plants might be added in the future.
In reference to businesses that are being sold at steep discounts, Dumarey said ANE, “I cannot say anything particular, but you can easily believe there will soon be plenty of “widow” diesel engine plants around Europe.
Japanese automakers have also made a strong case for keeping up their hydrogen-powered ICE vehicles with zero emissions rather than giving up on more than 135 years of engine development.
Yamaha, Kawasaki, Toyota, Mazda, and Subaru recently pledged to use synthetic fuels produced from biomass, hydrogen, and biodiesel to prolong the life of ICE cars.
The business was the first to offer a hydrogen-powered production car, despite the fact that BMW’s head of development Frank Weber refrained from citing hydrogen as a potential combustion fuel in the future.
The company sold the BMW Hydrogen 7 between 2005 and 2007; it was an E65 760Li with a modified 6.0-liter V12 engine that could run on both gasoline and hydrogen.

Does BMW produce its own diesel motors?
The following BMW innovations are found in all diesel engines: common-rail direct injection, progressive turbocharger technology, and variable turbine geometry.
Our diesel engines use two extremely efficient technologies that, when combined, can cut nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by up to 90%.
BMW offers 3, 4 and 6-cylinder diesel engines that are predominantly composed of lightweight aluminum.
A diesel engine typically consumes 20% less gasoline and generates 20% less CO2 than an equivalent petrol engine. enabling you to travel farther while producing fewer emissions.
Who makes the engines used by BMW?
For Mercedes Benz India and BMW-India, Force Motors produces high-performance, premium-quality engines and axles.
Force Motors has provided more than 1,15,000 engines and 1,00,000 axles to Mercedes Benz India to date. The front and rear axles of the C, E, and S class passenger cars as well as the GL Class SUVs have been added to this portfolio. This covers the 4 and 6 cylinder V-type gasoline and diesel engines, which are used to power the whole lineup of cars and SUVs produced by Mercedes Benz India.
BMW tasked Force Motors in 2015 with building and testing the engines for all cars and SUVs that would be manufactured in India. To develop and supply engines for their 3, 5, 7, GT series cars and X1, X3, X5 series SUVs made in India, Force Motors established a specialized state-of-the-art plant in Chennai next to the BMW factory. Over 44,000 engines have now been provided by Force Motors to BMW.
Can BMW diesel engines be trusted?
There are benefits and drawbacks to owning a BMW with a diesel engine, so let’s look at reliability to round out the list of additional things to think about. The 530d and 535d BMW Series 5 diesel versions include the same features that make the BMW Series 5 a popular pick with customers, but the diesel engines feature a 6-cylinder turbo diesel engine. The BMW contemporary diesel engine has a number of noteworthy benefits, as we have already mentioned.
Modern diesel engines are far better built and require less maintenance than diesel engines from the past. BMW achieved this feat once more by providing a solid diesel engine in the 530d and 535d.
Consumer Reports rates the engine’s overall reliability for the 2014 model year as “below average,” despite the fact that it may be well-built. As time went on, the 2015 and 2016 models became more dependable, achieving ratings of “above average” for the 535d model years 2015 and 2016 and “average” for the 535d model years 2015 and 2016, respectively. As a result, while you can save money on gasoline, you might also have to do more maintenance than usual, which is common for BMWs generally and not just the F10 diesels.
Therefore, if dependability is a high priority for you, the diesel possibilities might not be the ideal fit for you; instead, you might prefer to go with a commonplace petrol engine, of which BMW provides a wide range. However, if you want an engine that is strong and aggressive and reliability is not a top priority, it can be the right choice for you.

The business today employs more than 5,000 people and is one of the biggest makers of motorcycles and scooters in China. There is a research and development facility owned by Loncin. The BMW F 750 GS and F 850 GS engines are currently produced by Loncin. Additionally, the BMW C 400 X and C 400 GT midsize scooters are manufactured here.
Do BMW diesel vehicles have issues?
The notoriously problematic coolant system of the BMW X5 Diesel is known for developing leaks over time. Even while the earlier BMW X5 (E53) is the model with this issue the most frequently, it can also happen to other BMW X5 Diesel variants.
The BMW X5’s coolant system’s main job is to maintain the ideal range of temperature for the diesel engine. The coolant system, a crucial aspect of the car, aids in the proper operation of the engine and other systems.
The engine will overheat if there is any coolant system leakage. This could result in costly repairs as well as serious harm to the BMW X5’s engine and other crucial parts.
- broken radiator
- An ejected head gasket
- contaminated hose connection points
- auxiliary fan is broken
- expanded tank with cracks
if your BMW X5’s cooling system is dripping. Although it can be fixed by adding more coolant, the first sign of this issue may be an illuminated warning light indicating low coolant levels. However, if the warning light comes on once more, your car is having a bigger issue.
Look for any puddles or traces of coolant below your car to check for any coolant leaks. Additionally, the car occasionally starts to smell sweet, like heating syrup. You have a leaking issue if neither of these two things occurs yet the warning light for a low coolant level is still on.
The coolant in the x5 travels through numerous hoses, tubes, gaskets, and containers, therefore any of these components could be the source of the leak. The cause of this issue is frequently a damaged radiator, a blown head gasket, or hose attachment points. However, the valley pan (where the coolant is collected) may deteriorate in some circumstances, creating fractures and holes that cause coolant leakage.
You should head over to the service station right away to address this issue with your vehicle. Driving with a coolant leak could cause the engine to overheat, which could result in more serious issues.
If your head gasket has blown, it might cost you about $400 to fix the coolant leak. You should budget between $40 and $70 for the complete procedure of replacing a damaged hose. While the price to replace a damaged radiator can range from $350 to more, depending on the extent of the issue.
Which M57-powered BMW models are available?
The M57 is an inline six-cylinder, water-cooled, turbocharged diesel engine with common-rail injection. Over the course of manufacturing, it underwent two revisions. It is based on the M51 that came before it. The initial M57 engines and the TU (Technische Uberarbeitung, or revision) engines had a cast-iron block and crankcase, but the TU2 engines have an aluminum crankcase. In the TU2, the combustion chamber was also modified. The non-TU engine uses an injection pressure of 1,350 bar (19,600 psi), while the other engines utilize a pressure of 1,600 bar (23,000 psi). With the exception of the TU2 OL and TOP engines, all fuel injection systems utilise magnetic injectors. Bosch manufactures the common-rail system, and their DDE 4 and DDE 5 ECUs, respectively, are used to regulate it. An intercooler and a turbocharger are standard on all variants. One Garrett GT2556V turbocharger is included in the 2.9L M57, which is used in the E39 530d and E38 730d as well as early variants of the E46 330d and E53 X5. The Garrett GT2056V turbocharger is used in the 2.5L M57TU, the Garrett GT2260V in the 3.0L M57TU, the Garrett GT2260VK in the M57TU2, and the BorgWarner KP39 high-pressure and K26 low-pressure turbochargers in the M57D30TUTOP. M57 engines with more than one turbocharger and higher power output have a lower compression ratio, which ranges from 16.5:1 to 18.0:1. Two chain-driven overhead camshafts and two inlet and exhaust valves are present in each cylinder. 4750 rpm is the redline.
