The autonomous Mexican-owned subsidiary of the German Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, with its headquarters in Mexico City, is known as BMW Mexico (full name: Bayerische Motoren Werke de Mexico S.A. de C.V.). It is a privately owned subsidiary of the German-based BMW AG in Mexico.
Two production sites for BMW de Mexico are located in Lerma, Toluca, Mexico State. The production of BMW motorcycles in one and the BMW 3 series and BMW 5 series in the other came to an end in 2003 when BMW de Mexico stopped local assembly.
As all cars sold in Mexico at the time had to be locally built, BMW de Mexico was first founded in 1994 as a joint venture between BMW AG of Germany and a group of Mexican investors to produce BMW 3 series cars for the domestic Mexican market. The joint venture initially produced just the 3 series vehicles from kits utilizing both Mexican and German components, whereas other vehicles merely used whole kits delivered from Germany. As required by Mexican legislation, all models have to use at least 50% Mexican components by 1996.
Mexican suppliers of BMW de Mexico now provide parts for BMWs sold in the mainstream worldwide market. Mexican parts were used to build Mexican-built BMWs. In order to improve the supply of Mexican-built parts and the overall proportion of Mexican components in BMW vehicles, the German automaker BMW AG announced plans to invest US$1 billion in Mexican auto parts suppliers in 2010. BMW announced plans to erect a new facility in Mexico in 2012.
BMW de Mexico maintains a sizable repair and service facility, a school for international BMW staff, and manufactures parts for both domestic and international markets in addition to producing armored high security vehicles. For the Italian national police, the Italian government ordered 30 armored BMW sedans from BMW de Mexico in 2001.

Some of BMW’s X3 production may be sent to Mexico.
BMW, a car manufacturer with headquarters in Munich, is reportedly considering moving some of its X3 manufacturing to the San Luis Potosi facility in Mexico, according to Automotive News, which cited BMW CEO Oliver Zipse. The Spartanburg facility’s capacity has been exceeded by the rising demand for the popular BMW X models, but more models can be produced in the San Luis Potosi plant. The BMW 3 Series and the brand-new 2 Series G42 are now produced at the new facility in Mexico.
“Such a move would allow the luxury automaker elbow room at its maxed-out U.S. facility to accommodate customer demand for its full line of crossovers,” claims Automotive News. Oliver Zipse, CEO of BMW, added that “Mexico will be a key component of our overall structure. You’ll eventually see X models because demand is so great in the market. That’s all I have to say at this time.”
According to the American journal, it is unknown whether Mexico will produce the complete X3 or just a portion of it. The BMW X3 accounted for 75,858 units, or 22.5 percent of all sales for BMW in the United States last year, making it the best-selling compact crossover.
The Spartanburg facility is getting ready for the November 2022 launch of a new model. The first-ever BMW XM luxury crossover will leave Spartanburg’s assembly line as the priciest and most potent BMW SUV to date. The South Carolina-based factory can produce 450,000 vehicles annually.
Additionally, BMW this week officially announced that the future 2023 BMW M2 will only be produced at the San Luis Potosi facility in Mexico. At the new facility, where the BMW G20 3 Series has already been produced since 2019, the new BMW G87 M2 will join the 2 Series Coupe. In 2021, the facility in Mexico has raised production by 25%. The plant will launch a second production shift in 2022 and hire an additional 800 workers.
Since 2019, 170,000 BMW 3 Series automobiles have been produced in Mexico, accounting for 3% of all BMW vehicles produced worldwide. Two years after the Plant’s production began, it has already widened its scope to include the production of plug-in hybrid cars.
