My M340i will arrive at the port in California on May 15th. I have a query regarding the car’s audio components for those who have already received their vehicles (or who may otherwise be knowledgeable). FYI, I purchased the upgraded HK sound system.
When I built the car online, I didn’t even consider this, but from what I’ve read here and there, it appears the vehicle does not come equipped with a CD player as standard. I am aware that CDs are outdated technology, but I still have a ton of them. In addition, my 2016 BMW 328i’s built-in hard drive is filled with music that has been ripped from CDs.
Is there a hard drive included with the M340i? Is installing a port an option for the CD player, or can the dealer handle that? How, if at all, does it change the interior design of the automobile for everyone who may have had this done?
There is no CD drive on it. Furthermore, the car doesn’t appear to have been built with a CD player in mind, thus I highly doubt the option even exists. It does, however, have a hard drive, albeit I’m not sure of its size.
I’d like to think that the refit has a DVD player. Can anyone confirm that this device is only a CD player? A DVD player was installed in my E90.
So I checked compatibility and availability with my dealer, and I was given a cost of $340 for the CD player and $300 for labor. I’m in because it’s pricey but understandable.

Has the retrofit CD player actually been installed? It appears that my car’s wiring harness was insufficient to support the installation, and I would really like to be able to play my old CDs.
The installation was done for me, and it went quite well! In the glove box, the CD player is mounted. The binder with the car’s user manual no longer fits there, although it still fits in the passenger door pocket just fine.

Connect this to a USB port in the car, preferably a USB-C port with more power.
On this model, pressing the eject button twice in quick succession changes the default on-power ODD drive mode to TV Connectivity mode. The LED indicator will turn on and continue to glow.
After that, insert a CD into the drive and go to Media > USB Connection in iDrive. It can take some time for the car to recognize the drive and CD.
Use iDrive to choose a track after turning off the sound (click the volume button in the car to do this). Press the car volume button to turn on the sound once the CD drive’s LED indication stops blinking (the car appears to be buffering the music at this point).
If you skip the final step, the track will start playing briefly before stuttering while more of it is downloaded.
If playback stutters, pause (turn off volume) for a brief period of time to allow the track to rebuffer.
Since I’ve just just confirmed how to accomplish this on my front drive this morning, I have no idea how many music will play before buffering is necessary, let alone how well this will function while moving.
Anyone else out there who has or wants to try this? I would adore feedback. I can only confirm that this works in my i3, but I hope to be able to perform this in our second electric vehicle when it is delivered in December (Mercedes EQC). As long as they are able to recognize and play WAV files, I anticipate that other BMWs will function similarly.
