Berlin has been the location of BMW motorcycle production since 1969. The rich history of our plant makes us proud. Tradition and progress, however, are not incompatible. BMW Group Plant Berlin has evolved from a simple production facility to the lead plant that oversees our BMW assembly plants in Brazil and Thailand and controls global production as a result of the consistently growing demand for BMW motorcycles around the world. The Berlin facility manufactures CKDs (Completely Knocked Down)—assembly kits with individual motorcycle components that are assembled at the overseas sites—to supply local markets.
Furthermore, since 2017, BMW Motorrad has been receiving products from contract manufacturing partners in China (Loncin) and India (TVS). By closely collaborating with the Berlin lead plant, BMW’s high quality is assured at these locations, allowing us to consistently extend our model lineup and introduce new products to fulfill consumer demand.

All BMW Motorrad motorcycle manufacture, with the exception of the G310 series, takes place at the company’s plant in Berlin, Germany. TVS produces the G310 series at its plant in Tamil Nadu, India. Austria, China, and Taiwan are three countries that produce certain engines. David Robb, who served as BMW Motorrad’s chief designer from 1993 until 2012, when Edgar Heinrich took over, was responsible for the majority of the company’s current lineup of motorcycles.
The R1200GS and its brother, the R1200GS Adventure, were the most popular models, selling 24,467 units and making up 28% of BMW’s annual production.

BMW Motorrad motorcycles are divided into product families, with a separate letter prefix given to each family. These are the current families:
- BMW’s C series maxiscooters are referred to as Urban Mobility Vehicles. CE04 and C400GT are the models.
- 853 cc and 895 cc parallel-twin engines with chain drive are part of the F series. F750GS, F850GS, F850GS Adventure, F900R, and F900XR are the available models.
- Chain-driven, single-cylinder, 313 cc engine from the G series. Models include G310R, G310GS, and G310RR, and TVS Motor Company produces them all in India.
- R series – principally 1,254 cc twin-cylinder boxer engines with shaft drive and liquid cooling. The R1250GS, R1250GS Adventure, R1250RT, R1250R, and R1250RS models are available. The R18 employs a newly developed 1,802 cc air and oil-cooled boxer engine, whereas the R nineT uses an air and oil-cooled boxer engine from a prior generation.

2019 marks the 50th anniversary of BMW’s Berlin, Germany, manufacturing site.
In 1969, the factory’s first year of operation, 12,000 motorcycles were produced. It can currently produce close to 1,000 motorcycles each day.
The 2.4 million square foot building has a paint shop, machining shop, final assembly, distribution, and engine assembly. With a daily production rate of about 24,000 discs, it also manufactures brake discs for autos. Let’s examine the operation in more detail.
Every motorbike has a base that is built in the machine shop. Here, essential engine components such engine cases, cylinder heads, crankshafts, and connecting rods are produced along with frame parts, tanks, and chassis parts.
Five computer-controlled robots in the paint shop paint about 6,000 motorbike parts each day. Components can be painted with water-based paint in more than 40 different hues and come in more than 160 different shapes. The design of the paint application facility enables the robots to paint components in a haphazard order, regardless of their size and shape.
Three assembly systems, 21 mechanized workstations, and highly developed engine testing banks may all be found in the engine assembly area. Every day, 150 experts labor in two shifts to assemble more than 600 different minor parts and components into up to 500 two-, four-, and six-cylinder engines. An in-line 6-cylinder engine takes about 2.5 hours to assemble, compared to 1.5 to 2 hours for a Boxer engine.
Motorcycles are attached to one of 300 spinning hooks that are traveling along a flexible conveyor system while being assembled. The machines in this system are moved automatically along a 500-meter assembly line. At over 150 assembly stations, every mounting hook rises automatically to the best working height for ergonomics. Automatic transmission of all order-related information, as well as fastening torques and default settings, is made to the specific assembly station. The 2,000 parts and components take around 3.5 to 6 hours, depending on the model, to assemble into a finished and customer-ready BMW motorbike.
The BMW motorcycles have finally been finished in the finishing shop and are ready for shipping when they reach the end of the assembly line. Deliveries to the major European markets employ recyclable and foldable steel packaging. The motorcycles are wrapped in sturdy cardboard and wood containers for shipping to foreign markets. Because of considerations for sustainability and logistical effectiveness, the finished goods are shipped by cargo ship, train, and truck from the factory to customers in 130 different countries.
