BMW has just debuted its updated 3 Series for the upcoming year, after the introduction of its 7 Series and X7 SUV for 2023. The new 3 Series has a completely revamped front appearance, from the automaker’s distinctive split grille to the sportier and more aggressive bumper below, giving its flagship sedan a revitalizing makeover. Although the remainder of the back end is substantially unchanged, the rear bumper also features an angular design. All basic versions will come with black exterior accents and trims and come in a variety of new colors and wheel styles, but the M340i will also include throwback BMW Motorsport roundels on the front, rear, and wheels in honor of the M division’s 50th anniversary.
It makes sense that BMW would give the interior some love after giving the exterior a nearly total overhaul. New infotainment screens and instruments, both inspired by the iX, are now found in the cabin. The former display panel is 12.3 inches, while the latter measures a comfortable 14.9 inches. A long, curving panel spanning the dashboard contains both units. The center air vents and redesigned shifter are likewise located lower down. Three-zone automatic climate control and cloud-based navigation round out the changes.
There will be three variations to pick from in terms of its powertrain thanks to BMW’s decision to keep most of the options from its predecessor: a turbocharged four-cylinder model, a turbocharged straight-six model, and a plug-in hybrid powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. What’s in store for the 3-Series’ current engine lineup is unclear. A 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine with roughly 248 horsepower should remain the standard option in the United States. A 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 engine with around 382 horsepower should be placed above this, this time with the addition of a mild hybrid system that can provide 11 horsepower momentarily. The upgraded 2022 X3 has both powertrains.
While many of the upgrades planned for the standard 3-Series should be applied to the M3, its powertrain won’t be altered. The latest M3 has a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-6 engine that produces 503 hp in M3 Competition trim and 473 hp in normal form. As part of this update, the first M3 Touring wagon will also be introduced, though regrettably not in the United States.
Sales of sedans may be declining, but the BMW 3-Series is still an essential vehicle in the portfolio. The vehicle continues to sell over 40,000 units annually here in the United States, and we anticipate that the revised model will enjoy similar success.
