Option for audio: S676A
BMW’s HiFi (S676A) option puts the stereo audio system one notch above the Base model. As was previously said, practically all automobiles sold in the North American market are equipped with a HiFi system as standard equipment, although in the rest of the globe, it is an optional extra.
With tweeters (often two), an additional midrange in the dashboard (typically present in later cars), and an 8-channel amplifier in the trunk, the BMW HiFi sound system offers a notable improvement (7 of 8 channels are used to power the speakers). This implies that each speaker, or speaker pair (in the case of the midrange+tweeter channels), has a separate amplifier channel. Since the amplifier in the trunk has significantly more power than the one within the head unit, this is a significant upgrade over the Base system. As a result, the system can now play louder and with less distortion than Base models. The woofers utilized in the BMW HiFi speaker system are also more capable than their Base counterparts thanks to the more potent amplifier; they have a 2 Ohm impedance, go deeper with the bass, and provide cleaner sound at higher levels. However, the bottom end wallop provided by the OEM amplifier would still be insufficient, which is why upgrading the HiFi system with a potent Premium Audio System is so advantageous.

Explicit BMW Factory Audio
It’s crucial to understand which BMW audio system you have at the outset! The original equipment sound system from BMW comes in three different levels:
There are no tweeters or amplifiers in the six-speaker stereo system. The head unit supplies power to the speakers. The side mirrors’ inboard mesh tweeter grilles are missing.
The head unit signal has undergone significant equalization, while the back signal has undergone high-pass filtering. The front signal is as follows:
The front-facing tweeters and amp of the HiFi system. (While many 2010–2011 models have 8 speakers instead of the ten found in 2006–2009, the back tweeters were removed.) The head unit’s menu has only bass and treble settings, no graphic equalizer, and no “Surround On-Off” option. The dash does not have a center-channel speaker. Premium Audio Premium Sound, often known as “Top HiFi” within BMW, is marketed as:
All of these systems have a similar architecture, with comparable speaker dimensions, counts, placements, and channel complements.
A “Logic 7 On/Off” or “Surround On/Off” option, as well as visual equalizer settings, are always available for Premium Sound systems in the head unit’s menu.
Additionally, the E9x 3-series will include two sets of rear speakers and center-channel dash speakers (side and rear deck).
The center speaker and the second pair of rear speakers will not be present on the E82/7 1-series (so check the head unit menu for the equalizer).
Harman Kardon speakers for BMW
The BMW HK Hi-Fi system (S674A) has 12 speakers and an integrated 8-channel BMW amplifier (with only 7 channels used to power the speakers)… In other words, while the overall audio quality is respectable, it falls short of audiophile standards.
On the other hand, if you’re thinking of a high-end sound system, you presumably picture the BMW Harman Kardon surround sound system (S688A). This generous choice typically comes with 16 speakers, including 2 (8 Ohm) woofers, 7 mid-range speakers, and 7 tweeters distributed throughout larger vehicles like the X5, 3 or 5 Series. And while they are undoubtedly better than the majority of the stock alternatives, they are still not quite at the enthusiast-level quality.
It’s also important to bear in mind that the BMW Harman Kardon subwoofers have an 8-ohm impedance, which is higher than what you’ll find in other BMWs, for those who have them and are into sound system tweaking. Therefore, maintaining a same impedance when switching to a pair of slightly beefier woofers will be far more advantageous to the audio effect.
Partnership
strong, captivating, and completely dynamic. BMW’s Harman Kardon audio system offers unrivaled listening pleasure. For more than 30 years, Harman Kardon sound systems have been skilfully created to fill the distinctive interior of each BMW model with nuanced, well-balanced music that mesmerizes you. Every moment spent behind the wheel is improved by this listening experience, making every drive extraordinary.
Standard audio features of the BMW X5
The 2020 BMW X5’s standard HiFi audio system includes 10 speakers and a 205-watt digital amplifier. Through common entertainment options like Apple CarPlay, HD Radio, satellite radio, Bluetooth, and several USB connections, this system can pump out enjoyable sounds. The car also has pre-wiring for a CD player, a pre-wire for a SiriusXM(r) satellite radio tuner, and an anti-theft AM/FM stereo. Receiving “multicast” FM stations is possible with the HD RadioTM.
BMW Harman Kardon: What is it?
The first thing to keep in mind is that the term Harman Kardon is attached to two different BMW sound systems. Therefore, it’s important to be aware of the differences if you’re considering purchasing a car and are influenced by a BMW Harman Kardon update.
The first is a more subdued choice (the Harman Kardon Hi-Fi system with option code S674A). It’s typically seen in BMW’s entry-level cars, such as the 2 Series, i3, or MINIs. Although it bears the Harman Kardon name, it might not meet the high standards of many audiophiles.
The second is presumably what most people are considering (the BMW Harman Kardon surround sound system with option code S688A). It is at the top of the list of basic sound options that BMW provides and is clearly an improvement over its sibling. It may be found in larger vehicles like the 3 and 5 Series or X5.
It’s significant that the top-tier S688A Harman Kardon option will not soon be offered in the smaller BMWs. Make sure you aren’t dissatisfied when your new i3 doesn’t produce sound as loud as your friend’s X6 because that is what most people envision when they think of BMW Harman Kardon speakers.
What, therefore, accounts for the S688A Harman Kardon sound system’s enduring appeal? More speakers, greater amp channels, and more power are all indicators of success. Additionally, there are a few other numbers—the 1s and 0s that make up its clear digital signal.
What does “premium sound” in an automobile actually mean?
According to automobile audio expert JBL, all vehicles will ultimately have sound systems of the same caliber as those found only in luxury vehicles today.
JBL claims that its MS-8 System Integration Digital Processor is the place to start. It improves the present system in your automobile without requiring additional speakers or amplifiers.
Mark Hockey from JBL’s parent firm Harman UK projected that “at some point, this will be in all automobiles.”
The MS-8 optimizes audio for up to eight channels, and its digital signal processing (DSP) equalization and correction automatically enhance stereo sound quality and account for the speaker, electronics, and interior features of the vehicle.
The system automatically adjusts the sound for up to four seating positions within the vehicle when it is configured, ensuring that the sound reaches your ears at the same moment regardless of where you are seated.
The MS-8 costs about 600, and it is advised that a professional installation installs it because it can take three hours. But it is unquestionably less expensive than purchasing an expensive sound system.
What audio system is in the BMW 3 Series?
Each BMW 3 Series model’s superior Logic 7 (r) surround-sound systems from Harman Kardon produce natural, high-fidelity sound. The potent DSP multichannel amplifier and up to 16 high-performance speakers provide a distinctive, three-dimensional audio experience.
Can the BMW sound system be upgraded?
You will be given a variety of buying alternatives depending on the factory OEM equipment that is currently installed in your car. We can find out how many and what kind of BMW speakers your car has thanks to its special VIN number.
Your vehicle may be equipped with one of three basic OEM versions of BMW audio equipment. The catch is that upgrading from one version to a higher one is difficult, but you may still replace the factory-installed equipment on your car with aftermarket parts. What manufacturer stereo version do you possibly have then?
How can you tell if your automobile has high-end audio?
There are no speakers in the back shelf. I am aware that there are no speakers back there on the standard US audio system. At least the coupe doesn’t, though.
Telltale signs include an equalizer, which cannot be put on, and silver-surround “see-through” speaker grilles with yellowish cones.
Additionally, I believe the conventional system lacks tweeters on the back panels, but I’m not sure. To get the better audio, I believe you also need iDrive, but I’m not sure.
The speakers in the doors of the Premium sound system seem different; although the regular ones have a black covering, the Premium ones have a distinctive design and are more see-through.
There are separate tweeters on the back panels for the HiFi system (standard M3 audio). Mine (an ’08 coupe) does. I only have a flat rear deck and no rear deck speakers (other than the baby seat tether mounts). The upgraded premium cars, in my opinion, have speakers built into the deck.
If the equalization were the only way to tell, then someone peering in couldn’t figure it out without turning on the stereo because the equalizer is merely a component of the iDrive.
Cheapskates! Well, it’s really not a big loss. The tweeters they employ don’t seem to be all that good, in my opinion. I guess the 4″ speaker is now a wide-range speaker or possibly coax.
By the way, if you’re looking for this, YMMV because I can only see the yellow in the Enhance Premium Speakers when the sunlight strikes them exactly right.
What kind of speakers are in the BMW 5 Series?
- A. Front, side, and rear dashboard metal-matrix dome tweeters measuring 7 x 26 mm.
- B. Below the front seats, two 217mm woofers (for the centre bass).
- C. The dashboard, front, side, and rear 7 x 100mm ALumaprene midrange speakers.
- D. A 600-watt total output Class-D DSP amplifier using the Logic 7 (r) by Harman Kardon.
What BMW bundle includes Harman Kardon?
Every BMW and BMW M vehicle has access to the captivating Harman Kardon audio experience. The BMW M5, M8, X5 M, and X6 M already come with Harman Kardon sound systems as standard equipment.
How can I tell whether my sound quality is superior?
A “premium” system should have a factory sound bar, a subwoofer in the console, and four speakers in the dash (one box with a tweeter and a tiny speaker on each side). You most likely have the premium sound if you have a sound bar and subwoofer from the manufacturer.

Is there an amplifier in my BMW?
Behind the wheel arch on the left side of your trunk is where the BMW amplifier is located. You’ll need to remove a number of trims and clips in order to reveal it.
Yes, assuming that the car is not moving. Since an amplifier uses a lot of battery power, if the engine is turned off for a period, it will gradually drain the battery, causing it to discharge more quickly than if you were just listening to music without an amp. However, nothing will happen if you drive as you normally would.
