Is Hyundai Tucson Better Than Kia Sportage?

At both ends of its price range, the 2022 Hyundai Tucson is more expensive than the Sportage.

Space for Cargo and Towing

Tucson: The Tucson has a sizable 38.7 cubic feet (1,096 liters) of storage volume in gas form. And that is with the seats up; if you fold the second row down 60/40, you have an additional 80.3 cubes (2,274 L) of storage space. If you choose the hybrid, that amount is reduced to 74.5 cu ft (2,110 L), which is still a lot.

No of the drivetrain, the Tucson’s maximum towing capability is 2,000 pounds (907 kilograms).

Sportage: The Sportage has the largest hatch in its group, absorbing 39.6 cubic feet. When the seats are removed, the volume increases to 74.1 cu ft (2,098 L), little shy of its brother. A very minor reduction occurs when switching to the hybrid, to 39.5 and 73.7 cu ft (1,119 and 2,087 L, respectively).

The Tucson and Sportage are built on the same basis, so it’s not surprising that they align for towing. Despite having significantly less cargo room because to its leaner form, the Kia is still the class leader.

Sportage, Kia

The previous Sportage wasn’t terribly flawed, but in terms of dynamics and general driver engagement, it was in the center of the pack.

It’s safe to say that the new model is a significant advance over the preceding vehicle, even though I can only speak for the flagship GT-Line diesel in this instance.

Conveniently, I spent the week before the Sportage test driving the Hyundai Tucson Highlander diesel, which is the exact same vehicle as the Sportage.

Although I didn’t find many issues with the Tucson, it lacked the kind of driver involvement that gives a car its fun factor.

The Kia manages to deliver that playful energy lacking in the Tucson despite the fact that the two cars share so many of its fundamentals.

First off, while having comparable outputs, the Sportage’s turbo-diesel engine is more responsive. Although the Kia’s power and torque are delivered more linearly, there is a slight turbo lag.

This responsiveness is helpful for normal city driving as well as when you need to overtake on a motorway.

Even at low speeds, the steering seems heavy, and while turning, it seems to pull back to the center. On that front, it could be a touch looser, but when necessary, it’s direct.

The local ride and handling program from Kia is one of the factors contributing to the more entertaining driving characteristics. The Sportage has been fine-tuned by locals for regional conditions, and the team consistently performs admirably.

Hyundai’s experts didn’t give the Tucson their customary stringent local tuning, which gave the Sportage the advantage.

Given its GT-Line moniker, it has been modified for more passionate driving and feels more firmly rooted to the road.

Even while cornering, the Sportage doesn’t skip on uneven surfaces, and it stays amazingly flat through the twisty parts.

When the engine is pushed hard, the eight-speed automatic occasionally hunts for gears but otherwise performs an excellent job of shifting smoothly.

Also impressive is the riding quality. Urban speed bumps and potholes are not a problem for the Sportage. The good sidewall on the 235/55 R19 tires helps them absorb these jolts.

On coarse chip roads, there is some audible road and tire noise, but the cabin has decent insulation and is normally quiet. Additionally, the diesel isn’t as agricultural as some, which lowers noise levels. And the steering wheel showed no signs of shaking.

One complaint is that the car wipers are practically worthless. You have to manually engage it even when they are set to the highest auto level because they simply don’t appear to detect the rain.

Tucson or Sportage, which is better?

Unsurprisingly, the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage are two of the top options in a very, very crowded class when compared to one another. In its X-Pro trims, the Kia offers a somewhat more off-road-oriented choice, and its front-drive hybrid is the champion in terms of efficiency. Beyond that, though, it really comes down to personal preference: whether you favor the outside styling of one over the other, or the more serene interior of the Hyundai to that of the tech-heavy, angular Kia. In either case, you’ll be driving away in a capable, cost-effective family transporter.
