For instance, the Gold Wing is renowned for its huge capacity six-cylinder engine rather than adopting the V-twin trend. It might be necessary, or it might just sound so delicious when you do it.
However, disturbing the rev-limiter isn’t the big ‘Wing’s most effective riding style, which is where the problem lies. The GL1800 does fall short of some of its rivals in terms of total fuel capacity with only 21 tanks. If you ride it properly, the range should be between 200 and 230 miles. You’ll be looking at a more realistic 160 miles if you hammer it like you’re riding a naked.
There are riding modes for Rain, Economy, Tour, and Sport on the Gold Wing. For the particular application, the suspension, throttle map, and brake bias are all tuned. I mostly rode the Honda on our weekend trip in Economy while letting the electronics handle the gear changes. The throttle map was also the softest, which really delighted my pillion.
The paddles on the left handlebar are easy to reach if you need to shift down a gear or two to move forward, but beware—the bike won’t hold onto the gears for very long. The best course of action is to make a little advance preparation and put the bike into one of the more active settings before activating that peach of an engine. Alternately, put it in manual mode and control the adjustments yourself.
To be quite honest, I don’t think anyone would notice if Sport mode wasn’t present on the flagship Honda if Tour was the ideal option for highway riding. You continue to have full power, a good direct throttle map, and the auto kick-down occurs naturally.
