NHL ice is how white?
The ice was given a white coat. Pouring water over a concrete surface that can be cooled by pumping refrigerated brine solution through pipes implanted in it produces artificial ice, which is a misnomer because it is very genuine ice. The drab gray tone of the ice, which looks to be the color of the concrete, creates a subpar contrast with the black puck. The National Hockey League made the decision to paint the ice at the start of the 1949–50 season in an effort to improve puck visibility for fans. Although at the time lead carbonate was still a widely used pigment and may have been a part of the paint, it is most likely that titanium dioxide was employed as the white pigment. These pigments reflect every visible wavelength, therefore white light is a blend of all visible wavelengths. When a material absorbs some of the wavelengths while reflecting others, color is created. All wavelengths will be reflected by the perfect white paint.
Today, white paints, including those made specifically for ice, employ titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and calcium carbonate as pigments. On October 11, 1952, when the first episode of Hockey Night in Canada aired, painted ice was first seen by television viewers. When color television first came out, the brilliantly white ice surface had to be tinted blue because cameras couldn’t handle it. This blunder was quickly rectified by technology, allowing us to see hockey as it should be played—on a white sheet of ice—today. Ice skates can be utilized, but you can’t get that great spray of ice particles when stopping. Interestingly, these artificial surfaces are also treated with titanium dioxide to make them white. Real “artificial ice” does exist and is constructed of polymers treated with a lubricant.

In a sizable tank, water is combined with white powdered paint to create a liquid paint mixture. The ice surface is then painted using a big 12-foot spray boom and a pump. To cover the surface, two to three coats are used. Fine water spray is then used to seal it, and it freezes. The following step is to measure out the locations of all the lines, circles, and logos. Similar to what we learnt in school, blue or red lines are stretched in place, and you paint in between them. A pre-measured circle maker with a paint stick on the end is used to paint circles. While another person moves in a circle around them painting the circle, one person maintains the circle’s center in position. The referee’s circle, creases, and hash markers have all been measured and painted into position. Logos are hand painted after being stenciled into place. When heavy water is poured on top to create ice, all painted surfaces are sealed in place to prevent running.
