The update includes extensive hardware and software changes including cosmetic enhancements, faster processor, more memory, detailed 3D maps and improved routing. The internal HDD’s capacity has also been increased from 10GB to 20GB. NBT also introduced a redesigned iDrive controller with optional handwriting recognition capabilities and gesture controls. This was achieved through a capacitive touch pad on top of the iDrive controller. Additionally, NBT eliminated the requirement for a separate COMBOX module for USB media and A2DP because those features were already built into the NBT Head Unit. BMW Online was also replaced with the newly introduced Connected Drive, which relied on a hardware TCB module with a built-in SIM card for mobile connectivity.

HARDWARE UPGRADE (new screen, head unit, iDrive controller, trim) (new screen, head unit, iDrive controller, trim). Though the UI may look similar, you will get considerably better graphics and higher image contrast. The BMW NBT retrofit has a more power-packed processor together with a 200GB hard drive (instead of 80GB available in CIC), so the response and boot times will be much faster. BMW iDrive quick overview

The iDrive is a control and communication system introduced in BMW cars starting with production year 2001 and utilized ever since.

The purpose of the iDrive is to unify all cabin control functions in a single system which has a central computer (commonly referred to as ‘navigation’) that controls various peripherals (bluetooth modules, video units, radio tuner etc) (bluetooth modules, video units, radio tuner etc). The interface with the user consists of an LCD display in the dashboard and a joystick-like controller placed between the two front seats. The iDrive main computer is usually located in the dashboarsd and you have access to its front panel, with a few control buttons (see figure 1 below) (see figure 1 below).

Depending on your automobile model and year, the iDrive computer is a CCC (Car Communication Computer), CIC (Car Information Computer) or Next Best Thing (NBT) to name just the most popular. More information on these computers will follow.

Through the iDrive, the driver and the front passenger can control audio, lights, video, climate, the navigation system and the communication system (like bluetooth calls) (like bluetooth calls).

Since Rolls Royce is a brand owned by BMW, it too uses the iDrive system. And the Mini cars, another BMW brand, use a “Connected” version of the iDrive system.

What is BMW CCC?

A head unit model installed on BMW vehicles produced between 2003 and 2010 is called the BMW CCC unit. This Professional Navigation comes with an 8.8” wide-screen display and both the BMW CCC unit and the display are located in the dash board. The BMW CCC unit is prone to many issues, all of them totally repairable (regardless of what most greedy BMW retailers will tell their consumers) (despite of what most greedy BMW dealerships will tell their customers).

You’ll learn the following from this article:

  • what your mechanic or dealer means when they mention the CCC iDrive
  • what is the difference between a BMW CCC unit and a BMW CIC or an M-ASK unit

You’ll probably need to know whether your BMW has a CCC unit, a CIC unit, or another type of iDrive navigation computer at the following times:

  • when you are experiencing malfunctions in the infotainment system (sound problems, navigation reset, bluetooth disconnecting etc) – in order to identify the cause, you need to work your way up from the iDrive model
  • when you want to upgrade your iDrive. Your current iDrive model will inform what other modules you need to upgrade (like the iDrive joystick controller or the display in the dash) (like the iDrive joystick controller or the display in the dash)

We know the terminology of automotive infotainment modules is terribly confusing. We all experience this frustration, so don’t worry. This is why we have produced this article, so we may use our knowledge to aid others.

CCC stands for Car Communication Computer. iDrive is a group of hardware and software that controls the entertainment and communication systems in BMW vehicles made starting in 2001. The BMW CCC unit is one particular model of the BMW iDrive system.

What is NBT Evo?

NBT Evo ID5/ID6 is a BMW iDrive system version, sometimes referred to as iDrive 5.0/6.0. It was first revealed at the end of 2015, and some 2016 models came to the market already equipped with it. NBT Evo ID5/ID6 was developed as a successor to NBT and NBT Evo ID4, and has a completely different hardware as well as a new user interface. BMW 1-, 2-, 3-, 5-, 6-, 7-, and X-Series of the Fx and Gx generations are eligible for BimmerTech’s NBT Evo ID5/ID6 retrofit, even if it wasn’t originally included.

How can I know which BMW iDrive I have?

Navigation is a key part of the iDrive system, making it easy to get from A to B. But since roads and sites of interest constantly change, it’s critical to maintain your BMW’s GPS maps updated if you want to get the most out of your iDrive.

Many of the latest BMWs include over-the-air (OTA) map updates, automatically downloading the latest map data using the car’s built-in SIM card. In these cars, the process is similar to updating your smartphone to the latest iOS or Android version — your iDrive will download the data, and you’ll only need to restart your car.

Vehicles that do not allow OTA updates will require a manual upgrade. In the past, BMW navigation maps had to be updated by switching a DVD containing the map data. More recent vehicles have built-in hard drives that store the data, allowing you to update your map by overwriting the hard drive’s contents. BMW lets you do this by inserting a USB stick with the new map data into your car’s USB port.

Beforebuying a new BMW map, it’s good to examine which map version you require, which depends on your iDrive system. With your iDrive navigation open, use the settings menu to scroll to “Navigation system version”, where you will see the region, version and year of your current GPS data.

What navigation system does BMW use?

The primary navigation system for BMW is called iDrive. It has a control wheel, much like a volume knob. It also can be pushed forward and backward, and side to side, much like a joystick, and the center is a button that you can press to select or confirm your choice

How do I know what version of NBT I have?

The best way to tell if you have a late NBT or an NBT iD4 System is to look at the map version, this will either say NBT xxxx or NBT EVO xxxx

To check your map version:

Choose Navigation, Options, Settings, Position & Version History, and Check Version from the menu.

Starting in 2014 with the 2 series F23,l and over the following 24 months, around half of the BMW model range were upgraded to the NBT-EVO iDrive System. The 5 series, X1, X5 and X6 did not benefit from the NBT-EVO iDrive System until around 2016. NBT-EVO wasn’t available for the 6 series (G32) and X3 (G01) until 2017.

NBT-EVO iDrive is available in 3 versions, iD4, iD5 and iD6. The easiest way of determining which version you have is by looking at the menu screen.

Does BMW CIC feature Bluetooth?

BMW Bluetooth Audio Streaming You can only skip to the previous or next song if your BMW has the CIC / ENTRY iDrive system installed. The NBT & NBT Evo head units provide the possibility to browse the playlist and choose any song to play
