Instead of having rear-wheel drive like the previous model, the new BMW 1 Series has front-wheel drive. That has an impact on the design of the car. The new car’s engine is now mounted sideways inside the vehicle rather than lengthways, which results in a shorter bonnet than the previous model. Therefore, the BMW 1 Series doesn’t appear as distinctive as it did before due to its shorter front end. Even so, it sports a sizable front grille—though not quite as huge as those on other recent BMWs—to make up for it.
The SE model appears a little too basic. The grille has wide, black air intakes with integrated foglights and is composed of black strakes.
The SE cars come with 16-inch alloy wheels, and the 1 Series now resembles a traditional hatchback from the side more than previously. Brake lights on all variants are now bigger and slimmer, giving the 1 Series a wider appearance. SE vehicles have a rear bumper insert that is color-coded.
The lower intake insert’s outer, highest edges are finished in glossy black trim on sport cars, which feature the same grille as SE. They ride on 17-inch alloy wheels, and the bottom part of the back of the automobile is gloss black.
Unsurprisingly, the BMW 1 Series M Sport has the sportiest appearance. It sports more strongly sculpted lower bumper, a narrower lower central intake with an additional vertical slit under each headlight, and chrome grille strakes. It has side skirts that are lower and 18-inch alloy wheels, and at the back it has a larger gloss black insert with false diffuser ribs and integrated red reflectors.
The 128ti resembles M Sport automobiles in appearance. Along with some ti badging behind the back doors, it has a few red trim pieces at the air intakes and on the side skirts. 18-inch alloy wheels, grille inlays, and dark-colored mirror covers are also included.
The M135i and the M Sport are quite similar to one another, but the M135i eliminates the foglights and adds silver trim to the front. Its 18-inch alloy wheels are distinct from those on M Sport vehicles in terms of design. Although the M135i has a redesigned rear spoiler and 10mm wider exhaust pipes, it receives the same M Sport modifications in the back.

1 Series BMW
Since 2004, BMW has been producing a line of C-segment subcompact executive automobiles under the name BMW 1 Series. It is presently in its third generation and is the replacement for the BMW 3 Series Compact. The first generation, which served as the entry-level model in the BMW product line, was made in hatchback, coupe, and convertible body types.
Since 2014, the coupe and convertible versions have been sold independently under the 2 Series brand, therefore both body types are no longer part of the 1 Series lineup. 2017 saw the release of a four-door sedan for the Chinese market, which was built on the same front-wheel drive architecture as the third-generation 1 Series hatchback.

The upcoming 1-series will be the next BMW to forego rear-wheel drive, following the 2-series Active Tourer, but that’s not necessarily a negative thing.
We’re already accustomed to the idea of front-wheel drive BMW vehicles thanks to the 2-series Active Tourer, which is soon to be released. The 2018 BMW 1-series, with the exception of the more potent variants, which will have four-wheel drive, will also be front-driven, according to Auto Express, so it turns out that the AT won’t be the only front-driven BMW. The future of the 2-series coupe is not yet known, but as it will likely share a chassis with the 1-series, it will likely adopt the same front/four-wheel drive system.
BMW has rigorously kept to rear and four-wheel drive rather than the ‘lesser’ front-wheel drive option since driving dynamics are a vital component of the BMW brand, although in the case of the 1-series, that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.
A longitudinally positioned engine, which takes up more room and forces the dashboard considerably deeper into the cabin, is required to send power to the back. The large transmission tunnel that extends to the back also takes up additional room. That’s a bad design decision for a hatchback that is relatively modest like the 1er. The fact that no other significant manufacturer produces a rear-wheel drive hatchback this size is telling.
The majority of purchasers don’t even care about the modern 1-series’ rear-wheel drive angle. In fact, a 2010 survey found that 80% of 1-series drivers believed their vehicle to be front-wheel drive in any case.
There’s no disputing that the new 1-series will be a better car as a result of BMW sticking to its principles with the 1-series, even though it’s unfortunate that the replacement for the amazing M135i (and maybe the M235i) won’t have rear-wheel drive.

Although we anticipated it would come long ago, BMW has only just unveiled the new 1 Series hatchback with front-wheel drive. But Americans shouldn’t get very enthusiastic just yet. According to BMW, there are currently no plans to sell the 1 Series in the United States.
The new 1 Series hatch receives a more upscale appearance that is consistent with larger BMW lineup members. It incorporates a larger kidney grille with a connection in the middle where the kidneys meet. Large 19-inch wheels are now a choice, and the headlights and taillights are smaller. A standard Advantage model, a Sport Line variant with black accents, a Luxury Line version with aluminum accents, a M Sport model, and the M135i are all available.
BMW promises more headroom, kneeroom, and baggage space behind the back seats inside the cabin. Both a motorized liftgate and an electric panoramic roof with backlit trim strips that light up in six distinct colors are now available.
A revolutionary architecture is the cause of the BMW’s larger inside space. The 1 Series switches to BMW’s front-drive UKL platform, which also enables all-wheel drive, from a rear-drive configuration. All-wheel drive from BMW will be offered as an option.
