Hi everybody, I recently exchanged my 2016 Elantra for a 2019 Elantra Value Edition, and I’m at a loss as to how to activate the fog lights. In contrast to my 2016 model, the light switch stalk doesn’t appear to have a setting for fog lights. Additionally, I can’t find any reference to fog lights in the owner’s manual, leading me to question whether the triangle “fog lights” on the front of the car are indeed fog lights or merely fake lenses. If the 2019 Value Edition includes fog lights, does anyone know how to turn them on? If so, please provide details. Thanks!

To remove, counterclockwise-twist the lightbulb. reverse the installation process. Best of luck!EJ

What about the 2018 Hyundai Sonata’s fog lights?
Is there a sedan that has undergone a more significant makeover in the last five years than the Hyundai Sonata? The 2018 version of the Sonata once again swings into edgier terrain, in more ways than one, after retreating from its style-forward appearance in 2014 with a blander but not unattractive revamp. Bold lines carve out distinct triangles in the lower air dam for the fog light housings, and new headlights fit into a smaller space on either side of the more pronounced chain-link grille opening up front. The front of the car is all creases and grille. In spite of the fact that the back of the car is busy, Hyundai has blown up the Sonata’s badging so that everyone can see what you’re driving.
I thought the new design was more attractive than that of the vehicle it replaces, which I thought really wasted a lot of the design capital Hyundai had amassed with the Sonata that came before it. It’s encouraging to see the manufacturer emphasize flair without going too far into caricature in the sedan’s character.

Do all automobiles have fog lights?
Fog lights, also known as fog lamps, are tiny, block- or sphere-shaped lights that are situated below your car’s headlights on the front end. Since they are slanted differently than standard headlights, the light immediately illuminates the road in front of you rather than shining several feet over it.
Front fog lamps are used when visibility is compromised by bad weather, such as when it’s foggy, rainy, misty, or dusty. Fog lights are safer and more desired by many drivers because headlights can be overly bright in low visibility situations and reflect into the driver’s eyes.
The absence of fog lights in your car can now be considered the standard. Since fog lights are only compatible with a few makes and models, not every automobile has them. In fact, fog lights are now found on fewer cars than ever before as newer models do away with them entirely. The phase-out of fog lights, however, only applies to the front: Many states still have laws requiring rear fog lights because they are thought to be essential for sharing the road with other motorists.
Do fog lights automatically turn off?
Usually, a separate switch from the main light controls is used to operate fog lights. Some vehicles have buttons to switch them on—one for the rear and one for the front, where front fog lights are installed—while others have a collar you can turn back and forth on the light stalk. Some vehicles have rotary light switches to operate the fog lights; to turn them on, simply pull the switch in your direction.
The instrument cluster of the majority of cars will include a symbol that will let you know when the fog lights are on. It’s typically close to the sign that indicates the lights are on. While the front foglight symbol (you got it) points in the same way as the headlight symbol, the rear-facing fog light symbol will be pointing in the opposite direction from the headlamp symbol. The majority of fog lights are made to switch off when the car’s ignition or lights are turned off, so the most likely explanation for a car that is operating with its fog lights on in good visibility is that the driver was careless and forgot to turn them off.

Why don’t all vehicles have fog lights?
Fog lights on new cars are starting to lose favor due to advances in lighting technology. According to Skwarczek, models with lidar, infrared sensors, and daytime running lights are more prevalent. Adaptive headlights are available on some cars, turning their beams in the direction you’re turning while automatically adjusting their intensity to improve visibility in low light.
Furthermore, in the United States, fog lights are not a requirement for automobiles. In addition to not regulating them, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration refers to them as “supplementary lighting equipment.”
