The six miles I have to travel to get home are generally flat or slightly downhill. The temperature indicator never rose above one bar the entire drive since the car was trying way too hard to run in EV mode. It goes without saying that the car produced virtually no heat. Therefore, I want to know if there is a way to reduce the use of EV mode in a situation like this so that the engine can still generate some heat.

I recently purchased a 2017 Sonata Plug-In Limited. My commute is only about 11 miles, and I can charge for nothing at work. The entire time, I want to be in EV mode. But I face these problems:

(1) It is difficult to determine which’mode’ the car is in. The green “EV” sign to the left of the speedometer is visible, but it just indicates the vehicle’s current running status—whether it is powered by an electric motor or a gas engine. When I push the HEV button, it seems like I just ever see the “mode.” Then, in the “speedometer” (multi-function) display, I notice the mode.

(2) If I press the accelerator too hard when in EV mode, the gas engine will start.

(3) The vehicle appears to begin in HEV mode. I have to press the HEV button twice to switch to EV mode. The gas engine is started (even though it is not required) and “HEV mode” is shown in the speedometer area with the initial press. When I hit the HEV button one more, the gas engine shuts off and the display reads “EV mode.” This is annoying, and to make matters worse, I’m concerned that the gas engine’s short rotations won’t be good for it.

Is it possible to make EV mode the “default” setting when starting up? …and to prevent the computer from turning on the gas engine?
