Cheaper FWD Model Added to the BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe

A new front-wheel-drive version of the 2-series Gran Coupe will result in a price reduction from BMW. But even at that price, the X1 crossover, which starts at $36,395 for a front-wheel-drive 28i model, remains the cheapest BMW you can purchase.
The FWD 228i Gran Coupe continues to use an eight-speed automated transmission and a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four with 228 horsepower. According to the EPA, fuel economy is 1 mpg better overall than the xDrive variant (seen above). According to BMW, the front-wheel-drive sedan will complete the task in 6.3 seconds, which is 0.3 seconds slower than the all-wheel-drive vehicle. We don’t buy it because our 228i xDrive produced a significantly faster 5.1-second sprint to 60 mph. To test it out for ourselves, we’ll need to get our hands on a FWD model.
With a new, lower starting price, the 228i is now more competitive with the Mercedes-Benz A-class, which has a starting price of $34,700. So is the present Audi A3, but a revised model of that sedan will debut in 2022, with no price as of yet.

According to a CarsDirect article released earlier this week, BMW is expanding its US lineup with a less costly 2 Series Gran Coupe model. The base 228i Gran Coupe costs $36,695, plus $995 for delivery, which is a $2,000 discount for 2021. However, it goes beyond that.
While the other Gran Coupes use BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system, this new 2 Series variation will have front-wheel drive. Some purists view the introduction of a front-wheel-drive option from BMW, which has always emphasized the advantages of rear-drive configurations, as heresy, especially given that the two-door 2 Series models continue to be built on an older, rear-drive architecture. BMW will still only sell the all-wheel drive M235i Gran Coupe, which has greater power.
The regular 228i has EPA fuel economy estimates of 24 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 28 mpg combined, making it marginally more economical than the xDrive model. While the 228i xDrive is rated at 27 mpg combined, 33 mpg on the interstate, and 23 mpg in the city.
People who don’t require the extra functionality of all-wheel drive may find a lower-priced, front-wheel-drive 2 Series Gran Coupe appealing. For this reason, Mercedes-Benz, for instance, offers front- and all-wheel-drive variants of its small A-Class and CLA-Class sedans. And no one seems to be alarmed about that.
Compared to its four-door Gran Coupe sibling, the revised 2022 BMW 2-Series coupe is more stylish and entertaining.

The Gran Coupe looks very different from the new 2-Series thanks to its upward-sloping beltline, and its proportions are more “Honda Civic” than “luxury performance.” A convertible model isn’t mentioned.
The 2-Series Gran Coupe’s powertrain choices remain the same under the hood. The M235i offers a 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine with 301 horsepower and standard all-wheel drive, compared to the 228i’s 228 horsepower and front-wheel drive. The rear-wheel-drive 2-Series coupe, which starts with the 2.0-liter turbo-4 with 255 horsepower from the 230i, is more exciting. The M240i has an inline-6 3.0 liter turbocharged engine with 382 horsepower as standard equipment. There is an 8-speed automatic transmission available for all four variants. For 2022, neither a manual transmission nor an M2 will be available.
The front seats of either variety are comfy, but the back seats are less so. The 2-Series coupe has a new dashboard and upgraded electronics that significantly modernizes the interior and more closely resembles that of the Gran Coupe variants.
Both body types come standard with lane departure warnings, blind-spot monitors, and automatic emergency braking.
The 230i coupe and the 228i Gran Coupe, which are the base models for the 2-Series, cost $36,695 and $37,345 respectively, while the more potent versions of each start in the mid- to high $40,000 range. Power front seats, a leather steering wheel, front and rear parking sensors, and Android Auto/Apple CarPlay compatibility are all standard equipment.
