In other regions, ordinary is reasonably priced whereas premium costs 50 cents or more extra. Additionally, DE and NJ are now connected, and the Costco in DE is developing a gas station (we go there every three weeks or so)…damn, that’s going to be some nice, inexpensive 93!

Because the Costcos with gas stations are so far apart, I used to occasionally buy gas there. They used to be considerably less expensive than gas stations carrying other brands, but that is no longer the case, and I have no idea why. For the time being, I purchase chevron or shell because I can go there in 30 seconds by car from my current residence.

Why is gas at Costco less expensive than elsewhere?

According to GasBuddy industry expert Patrick De Haan, nearly every station in San Diego with the lowest prices is now a Costco.

According to De Haan, prices at all gas stations in California should be sharply declining because the majority of the refinery problems that contributed to the price surge are now resolved. De Haan claims that Costco is aggressively slashing rates, in contrast to other gas stations that are progressively lowering their pricing. “I believe they are dispersing inevitable discounts more quickly. Thanks to Costco, prices have decreased.”

There are many justifications for Costco’s ability to charge less. One is that it takes a reduced profit on all of its items as part of its business model. Second, Costco does not have to hold onto inventory since it sells gas so quickly. Costco is probably selling gas it acquired more recently and at a cheaper price, while other stations may still be selling fuel they purchased at high pricing one or two weeks ago.

The reason Costco can charge less may now be clear, but it still isn’t clear how. After all, Costco would continue to be one of the least expensive options in most local towns even if prices were hiked by a quarter per gallon the next day.

Alan Gin, an economics professor at the University of San Diego, thinks Costco’s aggressive approach to gas prices is motivated by how the retailer generates revenue. He said, “Most of their income comes from memberships. According to Gin, customers pay $60 or $120 (depending on the category) to have access to Costco’s warehouses, which accounts for up to 70% of the retailer’s profits. If it encourages people to sign up for these memberships, “they can afford to accept some losses on the chicken and the hot dogs, and now perhaps even the petrol,” Gin added.

De Haan speculates that Costco may be displacing enough customers from rival stations to force them to lower prices more quickly than they would like. “This is fantastic for drivers. I applaud them for reducing their prices so swiftly, as this will probably lead to competitors decreasing their prices even more sharply.”
