The oldest and longest-running automobile retailer in Illinois, Grossinger Auto Group of Chicago, has reached an agreement to sell nine of its ten dealerships to AutoCanada Inc.
With plans for further expansion, the $86 million transaction solidifies AutoCanada’s foothold in the lucrative U.S. auto retail sector. It is one of the largest acquisitions by an overseas buyer of a U.S. dealership group and is expected to conclude on April 9. It will provide $400 million (U.S.) in additional yearly revenue to AutoCanada.
In a statement released early on Thursday, AutoCanada CEO Steven Landry stated, “This is a major move for AutoCanada as this U.S. acquisition broadens our geographical reach and brand diversification by adding a blend of domestic, import, and luxury shops to our portfolio.” “This is precisely the kind of purchase that will help us grow more quickly. It is a well-established company that immediately boosts our profits and creates new beneficial OEM ties.”
According to its website, Edmonton, Alberta-based AutoCanada runs 54 locations across Canada. It is the only publicly traded dealership group in Canada and recorded yearly revenues of more than $2.3 billion in the previous fiscal year.
“It’s a chance for AutoCanada to start developing in a much wider market, as well as an opportunity to broaden the brand set,” said Ryan Kerrigan, managing director of Irvine, California-based buy-sell advisory firm Kerrigan Advisors.
In the transaction, Kerrigan represented the Grossinger group. After having several lengthy private discussions with AutoCanda’s executives who had expressed interest in purchasing American dealerships, things finally came together.
When this opportunity for a sale presented itself, Kerrigan told Automotive News, “We thought it’d be a wonderful fit for their debut into the U.S..”
Given additional administrative challenges associated with an overseas transaction, Kerrigan said the acquisition ultimately took nine months to complete.
AutoCanada can raise “significant assets” to purchase other dealerships in the U.S. now that it has established a presence there, according to Kerrigan.
