The transmission warning light had been on for some time and wouldn’t go out even after the car had been turned off. When I took it to BMW, they diagnosed the problem as an internal Tranny problem and replaced it for $5000 in parts and labor. It does hurt.
Anyway, a few weeks after receiving it back and beginning to drive, the light turns on once more. Bring it back to BMW, and they will claim that the aftermarket sound system in the vehicle is to blame for the electrical commotion. The error codes were cleared, the system was unplugged, and they drove the vehicle for 70 kilometers without the light coming on.
The system is now turned back on, but the light is still off. If the problem reappears, the transmission control unit will need to be replaced, which would cost $3500 plus likely $500 in labor. This is obviously absurd, and even though they claim that each time the fault codes were different (do they keep track of them so that I can look at them), I have a suspicion that initially there was nothing wrong with the Tranny.
So, in order to avoid spending an additional $4000 to fix the car, I’m finally looking to see if I can remove the fault code on my own. The sound system cannot be turned off.

Fault Code Reset
I neglected to plug the air flow meter back in after cleaning my air filter today, thus the engine ran poorly and the Check Engine light illuminated.
When I restarted the car after plugging the AFM back in, it continued to run poorly, as if it were still unplugged.
For fun, I performed the stomp test, and the code returned as 1215, as it should. I was pleased that I could obtain the engine codes.
To get the engine to work properly, I had to reset the light by unplugging the battery and clear the DME’s code.
I found it a little odd that even though the issue had been resolved by reattaching the AFM electronics, the DME kept acting as though it hadn’t.
Does everyone else have similar experiences?
Is there an alternative to unplugging the battery to reset the DME?

I don’t believe there one because the wiring diagram demonstrates that it is connected without a fuse directly to the battery.
If you check Pelican, I think the codes can be cleared by keeping the pedal depressed for 10 seconds after all of the codes have been read. Check out the website; I might be off.

- The screen will appear as in the image above after a little period, at which point the menu will once again appear at the top. To access the number 21 menu, press the odometer button (also theentering code menu).
- On the screen’s bottom, it will say: RESET? To complete the reset, press the odometer button.
Your BMW’s computer has been restarted! The existing settings must now be added again, or new ones must be added.
**NOTE: Slowly repeat the procedures if you are unable to reset the BMW computer on your first attempt. If you’re still having trouble, ask the dealership for help or refer to your car’s owner’s manual.
