The German company BMW has been producing the 3 Series brand of small executive automobiles since May 1975. It has been built in seven distinct generations and is the replacement for the 02 Series.
Initially only available as a 2-door saloon, the 3 Series now comes in 4-door saloon, 2-door convertible, 2-door coupe, 5-door estate, 5-door liftback (“Gran Turismo”), and 3-door hatchback body styles. Since 2013, the 4 Series has been used to sell the coupe and convertible vehicles, therefore these body types are no longer part of the 3 Series lineup.

The 2022 BMW 3 Series hasn’t altered much from the 2021 model, but one of the major improvements to this well-known small luxury vehicle occurred last year. The second generation of the 3 Series plug-in hybrid vehicles, the $42,945 330e and $44,950 330e xDrive, were introduced with that modification. Although the 3 Series has previously provided a plug-in hybrid, the enormous improvements made to the new 330e make it a considerably more desirable vehicle than its predecessor, and possibly the best model in the portfolio.
Although M3s may make headlines, the 330e is the model that deserves your attention the most. It has a four-cylinder gas engine with a turbocharger identical to the one in the 330i, a 12-kWh battery pack, and an electric motor that has 107 horsepower. 288 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque are produced collectively, but the key here is that 77 of those pound-feet PUNCH immediately from a stop. At 1,450 rpm, the four-cylinder engine’s maximum torque kicks in and replaces the electric motor. The hybrid version of the 3 Series might appeal to more people than the gasoline-only models.
In the meanwhile, BMW has added standard LED headlights with cornering functionality and what it calls Live Cockpit Professional, where drivers can configure the digital instrument cluster. More modifications are due in 2023. The front interior, which has a cockpit-like design, has sufficient of room for front passengers, but like other small luxury sedans, the 3 Series sacrifices both backseat and trunk capacity. Rear legroom is only 35.2 inches, while the 330e’s trunk space drops from 13.2 cubic feet to 13.0, both of which are essentially average for the class.
The 3 Series offers excellent base technology and safety, as is typical of BMW, but they charge extra for some of what competitors include. Automatic dual-zone climate control, semi-active dynamic lane-keeping assist, (wireless) Apple CarPlay, (wired) Android Auto, and frontal collision warning with pedestrian and bicycle detection are all included as standard equipment. However, BMW wants to charge you an additional $700 for stop-and-go features like cruise control, lane departure warning, and active blind-spot assistance, which will re-direct you if you try to merge into another vehicle’s path.
Can we really blame BMW for following their peers’ lead? Actually, no. And the 3 Series still provides a very outstanding combination of a sporty sedan and the renown cachet of the BMW name. In comparison to the massive grilles on the M3 and 4 Series Gran Coupe, not to mention some of BMW’s more recent tall-schnozzed SUVs, even the nostril-grille on this vehicle looks respectable. It still functions as the opulent and pleasurable machine it has always been below; it only now delivers a more powerful and environmentally friendly PHEV.
Compared to the BMW 5 Series, is the 3 Series smaller?

Although BMW has a reputation for building dependable vehicles, its poor 21st place finish (out of 30 manufacturers) in our 2021 Driver Power customer satisfaction study demonstrates that there are still some areas that need to be improved.
