The headlights turn on as you get into the car and turn on the power. I can use the voice command “display off” to turn off the display, but what about the headlights (angel eyes)? Is there a way to turn them off while keeping the electricity on?

The stereo may be turned on without pressing the power button. Though it automatically shuts off after around 20 minutes.

Okay, I appreciate all the comments. I was overworked at work after I submitted this, so I only looked this morning.

The easy fix of simply turning off the lights doesn’t work unless the DRL option in settings is unchecked. This fixes the issue and works perfectly. Turning off the lights at the switch is ineffective if the DRL box in the settings is checked. In this case, the lights will still be on.

Where is the option to disable DRL? In the settings, I can’t seem to find it anywhere.

Funny thing is, I tried your advice after totally turning off the car. When I hit the volume button or wheel, the radio and iDrive screen turned on, but pressing the Radio button next to the iDrive knob had no effect on me.

When the car’s other components are running in addition to the engine, that is what happens. Just knowing that you can wait in your car with the radio only on and no DRLs is good. That has always given me the willies.

The DRL (Daytime Running Light) can only be turned off from the iDrive setting, if that is what you mean.

But why would you want the DRL turned off? There are many other automobile manufacturers striving very hard to copy this fantastic and lovely function.

Hello, just wondering how to turn off the DRL even though I like them (in case I feel like stalking someone…ha ha ha).. Seriously, if not to turn off all lights, what purpose does the “0” on the light dial serve? Thanks!

This morning while deicing the car, I found that the light switch’s O position doesn’t turn off the headlights. I’m sorry for lighting up the neighbors across the street for ten minutes at six in the morning.

Probably a malfunctioning headlight switch. After 18 months of ownership, when the lights wouldn’t turn off, I had mine replaced in my 330e. At least when the switch malfunctions, the lights do not go out.

Why do the lights on my BMW stay on?

I have no idea why sometimes my headlights seem to stay on after I get out of the car. The lights occasionally stay on, which is far more frequently than I would expect considering the obvious lack of an engine. During the night when they are awake, my neighbors have contacted me a few times.

What might be the root of this? The keys are taken out of the vehicle when I depart since I keep them in my pocket while I drive.

Is the key close enough to the car when it is parked at home to “wake” it up? The lights are always on when I glance at my car in the garage, but that’s only because it activates when the key is nearby (in my pocket). It is set to automatically unlock. It’s always off when I check it without the key in my pocket.

After you’ve locked the doors and stepped out of the car, the lights continue to be on for a while. Headlight courtesy delay feature is how BMW refers to it.

We discovered that the headlights and interior LED lights would stay on for a long period if the driver door was opened before the car was turned off. To see if it helps, try making sure to shut off the engine before opening the driver door.

My machine is programmed to do this, and in the dark garage, it is always on a delay off.

Do BMW lights automatically switch on?

Anyone have problems with their automatic headlights? When I get into my car, even if I don’t turn the key, my headlights start to come on automatically. I turned my headlights off, but when I got back in my car, they were back on and in the automatic setting. Just a minor irritation, nothing serious.

Without any prior knowledge, I’m just speculating, but have you tried holding the off button for a few seconds?

However, given the prevalence of automation, I wouldn’t be shocked if this became the standard. Since automatic headlights are now included in the standard equipment and are not even an option.

If you have it set to auto, it will automatically turn on when it becomes dark outside. The smaller lights that are constantly on are daytime running lights, if that is what you mean.

What do BMW auto lights do?

This feature automatically alternates between your headlights’ low and high beams so you can focus on driving. Depending on the lighting, it automatically turns on and off.

How do BMW headlights function?

According to BMW, their new laser technology is more effective than LED, using less energy while producing more light. Here is a brief explanation of the science involved in how these headlights function.

  • Three sources of light provide light that strikes a mirror inside the headlight housing. Now, a lens made of yellow phosphorous reflects the blue laser coming from the mirror.
  • The blue laser light excites this yellow phosphorous, which then emits a white beam of light.
  • This white light is now reflected back onto the shiny reflector surface, where it reflects off the transparent lens and onto the road.
  • This is how BMW engineers improved the laser’s safety and utility.

Why am I unable to switch off my headlights?

  • Battery
  • Fuse
  • Switch
  • Bulb
  • Wiring

Your battery, fuse, and headlight bulbs are all operating properly if your headlights are on and won’t turn off. The solution is to isolate the switch or the wire, whichever is the issue.

Can you switch off automated headlights?

This feature can only be disabled by having a dealer connect it to his computer and turn off the daytime running lights. Happy new year from Bovan. It was useful to 24 people. These were useful to 51 people.

Why are the lights on in my car still on?

This is a typical issue that is manageable to resolve. You might only need to press the parking light switch if your parking lights remain on even when your car is turned off.

The location of this switch is typically on or close to your steering column. Even when the key is not in the ignition, this switch determines whether or not the lights are on. To solve this issue, you only need to flick the switch. Your parking lights will immediately turn off.

In the event that you are having difficulties locating this switch, you might need to look in your owner’s manual. Depending on the type and model of your car, it can be somewhere else.

What would happen if you failed to turn off the lights in your car?

The battery might quickly drain if you leave your car lights on all night. No one really cares if the lamp is halogen, LED, or xenon. The battery will discharge if the light is left on too long, and the car won’t start.

However, this typically does not require you to dial a garage or the breakdown service right away. Usually, a helpful neighbor or friend can assist. What you should do if your car battery dies is described in this guide.

How do the adaptive headlights on a BMW operate?

Curve-adaptive headlights have sensors that can identify road curves. To illuminate the path ahead, they turn in the direction of the bend. When you spin the wheel of your BMW to the left or right, they can also change direction. Some curve-adaptive headlights move their light beams closer to or farther away from the car depending on how quickly your BMW is moving.

Can the running lights be turned off?

Some drivers claim that operating the DRLs continuously damages the bulbs, depletes the battery, and continuously stresses the alternator. Although the impact is minimal, this is true. Daytime running lights provide increased safety, therefore it’s a little price to pay.

By changing the wiring, DRLs can be made permanently inoperable, however given the above-mentioned safety concerns, we do not advise this.

When the headlights are on, do the daytime running lights switch off?

Daytime running lights (DRLs) are intended to increase your car’s visibility during bright daylight. When you turn on your engine, they need to turn on automatically.

  • DRLs are too bright to be utilized at night because they would produce dazzling, yet being bright enough to be seen plainly during the day.
  • When you activate your headlights, they turn off automatically.
  • They don’t necessarily need to be distinct lights; they can even occasionally be merged with the front position lamps (side lights). If so, the DRLs become less visible when the headlights are turned on.
  • When your daytime running lights and your turn signals are very near together, the turn signal will flash while the turn signal will switch off.
  • In UN ECE Regulation 87, the performance standards for DRL are laid down.
  • UN ECE Regulation 48 defines operating requirements.

The majority of new automobiles, vans, and trucks have them installed as a result of European laws since 2011, while new buses and trucks have them since August 2012. However, EU regulations only apply to new cars.

Daytime running light retrofitting is optional, although kits are offered if you choose to do so. On the light, look for an approval symbol that has the letters “RL.”

If you install daytime running lights, be sure that they are set up so that they turn on when the engine starts and shut off when the headlights come on.

Why do my automatic lights continue to operate?

My automobile has a feature that activates the headlights whenever I enter a tunnel, multi-story parking garage, or a basement.

However, during the day, whenever I exit a parking lot or tunnel, my automobile sometimes “forgets” to switch off its automatic headlights.

Photo sensors, which are essentially electronic devices that can measure the quantity of ambient light outside the automobile, are what auto headlights rely on.

These sensors are typically found on the dashboard, either behind the rearview mirror or at the base of the windscreen.

The sensors will signal the electrical controller to turn on the lights when the ambient light level is low and vice versa.

Sometimes, when daylight is detected, the sensors do not react quickly enough, either because the windscreen is dirty, limiting the quantity of light that can reach the sensor, or because the sensors are not sensitive enough.

It’s simple to fix the first issue; just wash your windscreen. For the second issue, get your car’s auto headlight sensors inspected or changed.
