Your automobile key may not work to access the glove box because of the plastic handle.
If the plastic connection between the handle and the linkage that opens and closes the latch has been destroyed, the handle will move but do nothing.
Fortunately, glove box locks are not particularly strong, so you can see parts of the metal linkage beneath the latch if you simply pull open on the handle. It is quite possible to move the linkage and open the lock by inserting a thin flathead screwdriver or another comparable tool.
