How To Open BMW E46 Door Without Key?

Enhanced Member

My driver door key lock malfunctioned last night, and the lock cylinder protruded from the door handle. My car is locked, and the spare key I’m using (I misplaced my usual diamond key) won’t fit completely into the trunk lock.

To fix the driver door lock or to drive the automobile, I obviously need to find a way to unlock it.

I attempted to unlock the doors by using a long metal rod to pry out the passenger window along the B pillar. However, I was unable to push the unlock/lock button in with enough force, and I’m not sure if it would have any effect at all.

Any suggestions for how I might enter my car? I’m assuming I might just need to get a new diamond key and open the trunk, but I’d really prefer to be able to drive much sooner.

The “spare” key that won’t fit the trunk is a valet key, so let’s get that out of the way.

If the door lock cylinder is detached from the door handle, shouldn’t there be some way to unlock the car with a screwdriver?

In some cars, this does not function, therefore if you press the center console unlock button with something, you should hear the door locks all unlock. The door handle will then need to be pulled twice, not once, but twice, just like when you were seated in the automobile.

Other options include modifying your Valet key to fit the trunk lock or using a Dremel tool to make the key’s side grooves deeper. There are definitely photographs available somewhere if you search.

If the dealer isn’t going to rip you off, you could order a new key from them; you might be able to buy a service/wallet key for about $75 or a keyfob for about $175. You can “sync” the keyfob to the car in under a minute without using any tools, however I think the keyfob has money added for the service department to perform it. It’s possible that the dealer will receive your key by tomorrow afternoon, but it’s unlikely given the holiday and the weather in some parts of the US.

Without a key, how do you open a BMW boot?

The trunk can be opened manually with a key blade or from the inside.

You need a BMW with a key slot in the trunk and a BMW key fob with an extra blade inside in order to open the trunk with a key blade. Simply squeeze your key fob on the tab on one end and pull the blade from the other to remove the key blade.

Simply move to the backseats of your vehicle, open and pull down the center portion of your seats, and squeeze through to the trunk if you want to open your BMW trunk from the inside. Once you arrive, all you need to do is release the trunk latch to begin.

Simply move to the backseats of your vehicle, release, and pull down the center portion of your seats, and wriggle yourself through to the trunk to open your BMW trunk from the inside out. Once there, all you need to do is pull the emergency release handle to start moving. Naturally, your BMW must come equipped with an emergency release handle.

Without a key, how do you lock a BMW door?

If you don’t have a key and want to lock your car, enter from the passenger side, use the central locking button to lock the doors, open the passenger door, and then exit by pushing the knob (the black object that rises when you open the door) down and closing the door.

When the keys are inside a BMW, how can you unlock it?

Simply turn the key to the “on” position to disengage the deadlock mechanism if the keys were left in the ignition, and then use the interior power door lock or the inside handle to unlock the vehicle.

Without a key, how can you open a door from the outside?

It’s simple to open a door without a key by using a screwdriver. Find the one that fits your lock the best, then slide it into the little space between the door and frame just above the handle or knob. Simply place the tip of the screwdriver into the space between the bottom of the door and the floor while holding it in your right hand. Once you hear a click, turn counterclockwise. Repeat the clockwise turn until you hear a second click. Open the door at last.

Without a battery, how do you open the BMW trunk?

You must perform the following in order to enter your BMW’s trunk while the battery is dead:

  • By depressing the release button on the rear of the fob, you can remove the secret key from your key fob.
  • Find the slot where your manual key goes. On select BMW models, the trunk or the lid may have a manual key slot. In that case, open the trunk.
  • Find the door’s keyhole. Try the door if you can’t find anywhere to use a key on the trunk. Particularly the driver’s side door is likely to feature a place for a manual key. If so, open the car door.
  • eject the concealed key container. If there doesn’t seem to be a key slot on your door, it might be hidden in a hidden compartment under the door handle. The key slot can be seen if you wedge the key into the opening beneath the compartment and pop it off. Lock the vehicle.
  • For trunk access, fold down the back seats. Your jumper cables will be available to you at this time. But if you want to access the trunk from this position, a rectangular tab can be found inside the door of the trunk. When the tab is removed, a wire ought to follow. The trunk will open if the wire is pulled.

It could be time to call roadside assistance for assistance if, for any reason, you are unable to enter your car. Jerry should be brought if you don’t have roadside assistance.

For as little as $4.16 a month, Jerry provides roadside assistance that includes jumpstarts, lockouts, key replacement, and towing.

On a BMW, where is the unlock button?

Simply pressing the unlock button on the key fob’s top will unlock your BMW. Within the settings menu of the automobile, you may select whether to unlock all the doors or simply the driver’s door. The alarm system will also be engaged and all the doors, the boot, and the fuel cap will lock when you press the BMW roundel in the key fob’s center. When the lock button is pressed and held down, some models will also fold in the wing mirrors, close the sunroof, and any open windows. Press the boot lid button on the key fob’s bottom to open the boot lid while standing outside the vehicle. For BMWs with automated tailgates, holding it down will unlock the lock and open the boot. There is no need to be concerned if, in the odd case, neither supplied key fob is functional. The integrated key can unlock and lock both the glove box and the vehicle.

I have the keys inside my car, but how can I unlock it?

If your keys are locked in your automobile, one solution is to have a locksmith create a new key specifically for your vehicle. Giving the locksmith the VIN, or vehicle identification number, is one of the finest ways to achieve this. The locksmith will be able to create a new key that will fit the lock using the VIN.

You might need to provide ownership documentation to obtain a new key. The following is a summary of some of the details you might need to give a locksmith in order to have a new key made:

  • VIN
  • Keycode found inside the front door panel or in the owner’s manual
  • Title
  • Registration for the vehicle using your name and VIN
  • Identity card for insurance bearing your name and VIN

Getting a new key created may seem like a lot of trouble, but it is all done to keep automobile owners safe from criminals. You wouldn’t want a burglar to have the ability to make a key for your automobile by calling a locksmith, would you?

How can you use a screwdriver to unlock a closed door?

You’re probably working with a privacy lock, those doorknobs with the tiny hole on the exterior, if you’re trying to unlock a door inside your house.

If your doorknob resembles the one in the illustration below, a tiny screwdriver will work just fine to unlock it.

This approach won’t work for you if the door doesn’t like the one in the image above and needs a key to open.

A flathead screwdriver tiny enough to fit in the hole on the doorknob is required to unlock a privacy lock.

Push forward after inserting your screwdriver into the opening. If your doorknob has a privacy lock with a push-button design, the door should open with a loud click.

You are probably dealing with a turn-style lock if pushing the door doesn’t cause it to unlock. Turn the screwdriver until you feel it fall into a slot to get around these locks. The lock will then open as you keep rotating the screwdriver.

BMW double lock: what is it?

I apologize if this was been covered. How exactly does the double-lock feature for remote keyless entry work? It is reported that the dealer codes it. Please accept my gratitude for your time.

The “double-lock” function makes it hard to access the door from the outside or from within the automobile when you lock the door because the lock moves in a “double locking” manner.

By doing this, a person cannot break a window, thread a wire through a crack, or open the sunroof before pulling the inner door handle to open the automobile door.

It becomes active when the comfort access (keyless) locking mechanism or the key remote are used to lock the door.

When you leave the car with someone inside, keep this feature in mind. They will be unable to exit the vehicle if you lock it using the remote or a keyless entry system.

Instead, instruct them to use the lock button on the dash to secure the vehicle from the inside. If they need to exit, they can then open it again on their own.

I appreciate your considerate response very much. The BMWNA website states that the dealer coded it. Be careful.

Consider the entire alarm system when referring to the “programmed” part rather than the double lock. And that ought to work better with vehicles that don’t come with alarms as standard but can have them installed at the dealer (like some USA 3 Series ect)

Yes, select “features & specs” from the left-hand menu under “Learn,” then click “standard features” and finally “safety & security” at the top.
