1. Set the service mode or position on your wiper blades. To do that, get inside the car and push the START button twice—once to turn the ignition on and once to turn it off—without starting the engine. To raise the wipers, press the wiper stalk (arm) up and hold it there for at least five seconds.
2. After removing the wiper from the windshield, set the wiper blade so that it is horizantal.
3. Pull the wiper blade towards you to remove it.
4. Substitute a fresh wiper blade for the old one.
5. Upon entering the vehicle, click the START button to start the engine. Next, lower the wiper stalk to return the wiper blades to their usual position.
6. To turn off the ignition, press the START button.

Procedure
- Place the parking brakes on and turn off the ignition while you park the BMW on a flat surface.
- Choose the wiper blade you want to replace first. In this instance, we’ll replace the wiper on the driver’s side.
- Upright the wiper blade. You risk breaking the glass if you let the wiper arm fall on the windshield.
- By applying pressure to the hook’s underside, the plastic cover can be removed. By doing this, you’ll be able to remove the wiper arm by rotating it 90 degrees. Pull the wiper away from you and away from the front.
- Next, swap out the wiper blade on your BMW 3-Series’ passenger side. To ensure that the wiper blade locks into position, always press it firmly. Slowly lower the arm to the windshield once the wiper blade has locked.
How do I take the arms off the windshield wipers?
Slide the locking clip out by lifting the wiper arm a few inches off the glass. Pull the arm away from the splined shaft after lowering it.
Every wiper arm has a hinge at the base that enables it to flex as it follows the window’s curve. Even with a fresh blade, if the wiper skips over some areas, it’s likely that the hinge is corroded and binding. Due to their little use, rear window wipers are the most frequently affected.
Although the hinge can be oiled, the corrosion and binding almost always come back. Replace the wiper arm in order to solve the issue permanently.
A splined shaft accepts all wiper arms. Some have nuts holding them in place. Simply lift the protective cap, release the nut, and pull off the arm to replace that type.
The locking clip secures the other type in place. Install the replacement arm after unlocking it as demonstrated in the bottom picture.
My windshield wipers won’t come off, why?
