Even in the short term, I don’t think the spray paint will stand up very well. For your information, you can purchase eBay surrounds for $50 or acquire them secondhand for less than $200.
never had experience with vinyl. Originally intended to plastidip them, however after a few months, that will start to peel off.
Plastidipping is more resilient than you might realize; it is a flexible, rubber-like surface that, when properly applied, is resistant to chipping from road debris. My Ford SUV and E46 M3’s front grill components, as well as various other car parts, were plastidipped. Both have maintained their appearance without peeling for many years. Depending on your driving habits, Plastidip may start to seem “stale” after a while, but it is simple to remove and reapply.
They look good, and since the paint is not glossy, it will be simple to simply spot-repair them if they chip. Plastidip does, however, hold up fairly well. On a Nissan Frontier I owned, I fixed the grill, and it held up for the entire year I owned it.
Initially intended to purchase some black grills from eBay or another internet retailer. But I didn’t understand how the pricing ranged from $2 to $300.
They were wonderful! I purchased mine from Craigslist, sent from Riverside, California, for $100 for the kidney grills and $95 for the fender vents.
Look on Craigslist. But that was two years ago.
I’ve done vinyl and spray paint on front end pieces before (albeit not on an 80k vehicle), and neither of them lasted longer than six months.
Quote:
If it starts to peel or chip, I’ll submit another update here. I’ll just get some new grills online if it doesn’t work. It wasn’t harmful to give this a shot initially to test how it would hold up.
Update: It has been roughly two months. And indeed, I’m experiencing a lot of tiny chips and fissures the size of sand. Except in bright sunshine, where the chrome underneath glows, not very noticeable.
1. The chromed pieces weren’t prepared. Clean up the area with 1000 grit before it is sprayed.
2. Use priming spray.
3. Color the area.
4. Use 2 part clear to spray. Cover the 2 part clear with a coat of 1 part satin/matte if you prefer satin/matte over gloss.

How should a grill be prepared for painting?
Cover the work area with a drop cloth to create a spray area. Make sure the space is adequately ventilated.
Sand the surface to smooth off any rough spots. Use a wire brush to remove any flaking rust that may be present.
Use an all-purpose cleaner/degreaser to thoroughly clean the grill and lid, making sure there are no grease or food drippings left behind. Allow to dry after rinsing with water.
Tape off any surfaces you don’t wish to paint, including handles and the grill grate.
Sweeping side-to-side with a tiny overlap, start painting while holding the can of Krylon(r) High Heat Max Aluminum 6-8 inches from the surface.
Until you are happy with the appearance, keep adding light, successive coats and wait 30 to 60 seconds between each one.
NOTICE: Avoid painting the interior of the grill’s lid, the interior of the grill’s base (if it’s a charcoal grill), or the grate that food is cooked on.
In 10 minutes, Krylon(r) High Heat Max is dry to the touch, and it takes about an hour to be handled.
Can I blacken my grill?
Identifying whether your grill needs to be repainted is the first step. Most enamel-coated grills (like the Weber Genesis Series) and stainless steel grills don’t require repainting. Although black painted grills are capable of being painted, it’s possible that all your grill requires is a thorough cleaning and not a full paint job.
The main threat to the black-painted grill is oxidization, not rust. You can have an oxidization issue if your grill has a drab, ashy appearance. It’s possible that you don’t need to get your grill painted again. Consider giving your grill a good cleaning with dish soap and warm water. To avoid scratching the finish and having to repaint your grill rather than merely cleaning it, stay away from anything overly abrasive. Apply a thin layer of cooking oil to the impacted regions after the surface has dried. Your grill or smoker’s look will be improved and the surface will be sealed.
A rusted grill might be painted.
I decided to use Krylon’s High Heat Spray Paint in Black. This stuff is incredible! It applies very easily and doesn’t leak or clog in any way! It prevents rust and can resist heat up to 600 degrees, making it ideal for outdoor grills and fire pits.
I then applied a second and third coat, letting the paint thoroughly dry in between.
Can you paint a grill made of plastic?
OEM grilles are primarily constructed of plastic and chrome. Even with expert surface preparation, chrome is challenging to paint because it is prone to chipping. Indeed, the majority of reputable paint shops won’t offer a warranty for a painted chrome surface. Painting plastic can be challenging as well. Whether the surface is chrome or plastic, it must be well prepared.
Why is the BMW grille known as the kidney?
The BMW 303 is significant in BMW history for two reasons: first, it was the mid-size sedan’s first six-cylinder model; and second, it was the first car to include an air inlet that has since become synonymous with BMW and is still present in nearly all of its vehicles today, nearly 90 years later.
Can a chrome grill be painted over?
You can cover chrome with paint, yes. But doing so successfully necessitates a little sanding and priming. To give the paint something to adhere to, you must sand the chrome. You can paint chrome with acrylic or latex paint after priming and sanding.
Why do BMW’s grills come in three colors?
In the 1970s, when the German carmaker initially began its motorsports racing program, the famous /M logo of BMW was created. The italicized “M” of the logo is followed by various colored stripes, each of which has a distinct significance.
The blue stripe, according to BMW Blog, symbolizes both the automaker and the Bavarian area from which it is derived. The red stripe commemorates Texaco, a major American oil company that collaborated with BMW in the early stages of M racing. As red and blue combine to form purple, the central purple stripe stands for their cooperation.
BMW made a minor change to the M emblem in recent years, swapping the purple stripe with a dark blue one. The symbol is still widely recognized, though.
In fact, the three stripes are tastefully incorporated into both the exterior and inside of every BMW M-badge car. Even vehicle upholsterers are finding it difficult to come up with fresh, original methods to use the colors to adorn the cabins.
Of course, using the proper thread and colors is necessary in order to pull off these small but significant elements.
Amann’s Serafil polyester thread, which is used by BMW, is available at JPM Coachworks in Smyrna, Georgia.
According to Joseph Pavich of JPM Coachworks, “the most popular colors individuals choose for the tri-stitch are red 504, light blue 7463, and dark blue 1078.” “Most modern wheels use a significantly thicker Tex size 207 (Ticket size 15), while older wheels used a Tex size 138 (Ticket size 20).”
Can I paint a grill using normal spray paint?
You can spray paint a barbecue grill, yes. The only thing you need to be sure of is that your barbecue grill cannot be painted with normal spray paint. Find a spray paint that can endure high temperatures because the heat from the grill can cause the paint to fracture.
There are numerous high heat spray paints on the market right now. These spray paints were created specifically for use outside. They are made to endure incredibly high temperatures.
These high heat spray paints are what you should use if you’re seeking for a spray paint to paint your barbecue grill. These high heat spray paints will outlast all other types of spray paint and shield your grill from rust and corrosion.

I could spend the entire day thinking up new color combinations, as you can undoubtedly see, and if you’re not careful, so could you. When you have some free time, visit the BMW Individual visualizer.
What color is associated with BMW?
Blue represents BMW, red represents motorsport, and violet represents the special union of the two, according to BMW M. This still remains true today if dark blue is used in place of purple. The BMW M colors are derived in a clever yet straightforward way.
Can you paint chrome plastic?
Use of chrome spray paint is a low-cost alternative. One benefit is that you may do this at home in your garage or at work in your shop. The fact that chrome paint for plastic looks more like silver spray paint than a true chrome finish is a drawback.
What kind of paint adheres to chrome?
If you do the proper surface preparation before painting, which entails cleaning the surface, sanding it, and painting it with a high-quality primer, a good metal paint, such as a few formulas produced by RUST-OLEUM, should adhere to chrome. The right paint should be available at your neighborhood hardware shop, and it can also be purchased online from places like Amazon.
Does chrome paint exist?
Even the best chrome paint spray will appear to be a gleaming layer of metal, but what is this paint actually made of? You might refer to it as front surface silver. This indicates that the silver in the paint is only visible at the finish’s top. The paint appears to be a brilliant, glossy silver, yet it is not made of silver or metal. The surface of chrome paint is simply a pigmented spray paint that has undergone a unique reaction to turn it into a dazzling, glossy silver. Depending on the product, chrome paint can be used both inside and outside to produce a unique metallic appearance. Just be aware that this paint does not behave like real chrome and instead behaves like other paints. Therefore, while touching up metal finishes or auto parts, be gentle and don’t treat the item like a harsh metal plating.
How long does the Plasti Dip stay warm on the grill?
Plasti Dip(r) could last up to three years without needing to be touched up if applied correctly. It is incredibly strong and won’t lose its bond. The lifespan of the product is greatly influenced by the spraying distance and the number of coats used. A new refresher coat can be simply applied after three years, or even during those three years if desired.
Does chrome-like powder coating exist?
Super Chrome Plus is a polyurethane powder coating that reflects light like chrome. It is our most reflective and brightest powder. We prefer to use it as a powder coating base coat below transparent powder finishes to provide a brilliant and vivid candy effect because of its authentic chrome-like appearance.

It is necessary to apply a top coat of Clear Vision PPS-2974 to maintain a genuine chrome-like appearance. Alternatively, depending on the finish you want, you can use any Prismatic transparent, candy, or several gloss clears. In the illustration, the left side has a top coat of Clear Vision PPS-2974 over Super Chrome Plus.
