Usman Baba, the inspector general of police (IGP), has directed that all automobiles that have been impounded at police stations be released to their owners immediately upon posting bond.
The force spokeswoman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement on Tuesday that the development was seen as a part of attempts to improve the appearance of the police stations.
The bond requirement means that when called upon by law, car owners who have cases to answer in relation to offenses must appear in person and bring the offending vehicles.
Owners of these vehicles are reportedly urged to visit police stations with legitimate identification in order to collect their property.
The announcement states, “The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, psc (+), NPM, fdc, has ordered the immediate evacuation of all impounded, accident-prone, and exhibit cars from Police Stations worldwide.
“The order is based on the persistently offensive and impolite way that these vehicles are packed inside police facilities, producing annoyance and an offensive look at Police Stations.
“The IGP disapproves of the practice of stockpiling vehicles found at crime scenes or vehicles whose ownership is disputed or in question in police facilities with onerous requirements and drawn-out procedures for the rightful owners to reclaim them; stressing that such an act would no longer be tolerated as it amounts to gross abuse of administrative and judicial processes.
The IGP further emphasizes the need for chiefs of police stations and formations to follow the proper procedures in order to do the necessary evaluation and release such vehicles in these categories, on bond, to their owners.
“The IGP reiterates that the directive is a component of efforts being made by his administration to guarantee that employees have a comfortable working environment so that the necessary methods to combat crime and criminality in the nation may be put into motion.
“The IGP also ensures that decongesting the police stations and facilities around the country would be of considerable operational utility to the force in successfully discharging its policing duties and providing assistance to the owners of such show cars,” the statement continues.
“The Inspector General of Police also asks all concerned members of the public to go to different police stations or formations to recover and claim their vehicles, together with legitimate proof of ownership and appropriate methods of identification.
