The Volkswagen Group MLB platform is the organization’s platform concept for shared modular assembly of its longitudinal, front-engined vehicles, which was revealed in 2012.
It was created by Audi and debuted on the Audi A5 in 2007 before moving on to the Audi A4, Audi Q5, Audi A8, Audi A7, Audi A6, Porsche Macan, and the second-generation Audi Q7 in that order (MLB Evo). Only Audi and Porsche used the MLB platform up until 2015. Volkswagen debuted the Phideon luxury sedan, based on the MLB, in February 2016. It was only produced and offered in the Chinese market.
The technique is marketed by Volkswagen Group under the code name MLB, which stands for Modularer Langsbaukasten and translates to “Modular Longitudinal Matrix” in English. Within VW’s larger MB (Modulare Baukasten, or modular matrix) program, MLB is one technique. For its vehicles with transverse engine orientation, MQB is a related strategy.
Despite the fact that a model may be stated to employ an MLB platform, it is more of a method for introducing rationality across many platforms that share engine orientation – regardless of model, vehicle size, or brand. As a result, MLB employs a “core matrix” of parts across a range of platforms, such as a shared engine-mounting core for all drivetrains (e.g., gasoline, diesel, natural gas, hybrid and purely electric). The vehicle can be stretched and bent to meet any body type, size range, or drivetrain needed. The only elements that are fixed are the positioning of the pedal box, firewall, front wheels, and windscreen angle. In addition to lightening the load, the approach enables several models, including those from the company’s numerous brands, to be produced at the same facility, which further reduces costs. Former head of Volkswagen’s Research and Development, Ulrich Hackenberg [de], referred to MB as a “strategic weapon.”
According to Jalopnik, “the major feature is the uniform position of all motors and transmissions” and that “(the business) hopes( to) cut down on technical expenses and weight/complexity when transferring the car over to other models.” The British publication Car said “The concept signals a return to the fundamentals of mass production in a sector where complexity has grown out of hand over the past 100 years. (The company) intends to reduce the time required to create a car by 30% by developing a common, interchangeable set of parts from which to build a range of cars.”

With the current 2020 992-series 911, which goes under the VW Group name of MMB for “Modular Mid-Engine Platform,” Porsche’s storied sports vehicles have been integrated into the corporate fold. The contemporary Audi R8 and Lamborghini Huracan mid-engine supercars share the distinctive MSS (Modular Sports System) chassis, despite the fact that it would make sense to base both on the same MMB platform. The MMB needs a separate modular system, though, because of the abundance of 992 and 718 versions that will be available in the near future.
The Audi Q7, Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, and a number of other vehicles all use the MLB Evo platform, which also underpins the current 9YA Cayenne.
All Porsches built on the MMB platform share the same fundamental front body construction. Nevertheless, Porsche’s updated manufacturing processes and factory layout enable different front modules to be equipped with longitudinal load beams of various wall thicknesses (thinner for the 718 and 992 coupes, thicker for Cabriolets and Turbos) as they go down the same production line.
Porsche used the complete aluminum body side panel as a separate pressing for the first time on the MSB platform of the 971 Panamera. The panel is then crimped and roll-hemmed onto the main unibody. On the new 718 MMB system (992/next-gen), this method is used. Due to this, the coupe, Cabriolet, Targa, and mid-engine side panels may be applied to the various variations as needed and all variants can be constructed on the same assembly line. Even the 992 coupe’s own modular roof panel subsystem is simply installed on the same manufacturing line, and it comes in plain aluminum, sheet-metal sliding sunroof, glass sliding sunroof, carbon fiber, and magnesium varieties.
The MMB platform for the 992 was initially designed with a future electric hybrid version in mind, with additional room given for a “E-Machine” inside the PDK gearbox case as well as additional space up front for a battery pack and larger cooling system. As of this writing, however, it is unclear what will happen to the 992 Hybrid project; Porsche may decide to change its electrification approach and move forward to a full battery electric vehicle (BEV) based on the 718 version of the MMB platform.

From the sloping roof line, the Porsche DNA is immediately apparent; the “flyline” gives the Macan its distinctive sports car features.
The 2023 Porsche Macan EV will have a longer range than the Taycan.

Porsche is presently developing prototypes for an electrified version of its best-selling vehicle, which will debut in 2023. Porsche claims that the larger battery pack has, so far, been selected by the majority of its customers in North America, therefore there may only be one battery size available here. Currently, the Macan is offered in basic, S, Turbo, and GTS variants with turbocharged four-cylinder or turbocharged V-6 engines.
The Macan EV, according to Porsche, will have “considerably” longer range than the Taycan. That means it should have a greater range than the 2021 Taycan 4S model, which has the greatest range in the lineup at 227 miles according to the EPA. It will need to have this in order to compete with other electric crossovers like the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E, both of which have versions with more than 300-mile EPA range ratings. Porsche also has plans to strengthen its affiliation with the Electrify America network of charging stations, perhaps by adding destination chargers at resorts and dealerships.
Additionally, they will not look like the typical Macan. The Taycan and Panamera were mentioned by Porsche’s executive board member for development, Michael Steiner. The images give away some of the visual changes between the two Macans, particularly on the front end where Porsche tried to hide it to match the design of the current Macan. The headlights on these prototypes are smaller and, naturally, lack the typical grille found on the gas-powered version. They resemble the present crossover in terms of size and shape except from that. Additionally, Porsche claims that their propulsion sound will be similar to the Taycan’s.
Once the new gas-powered model debuts by the end of the year, we should know more about the electric Macan.

S Macan
According to the model year, installing a “S” emblem on the back of your Porsche Macan implies you’re installing a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 with either 340 or 348 horsepower.

Early Macan S and GTS vehicles had an oil leak coming from the sealing on the timing case lid. Although the problem was fixed in later versions, oil leaks could still occur in the future because of the timing case seal. The fix is complicated and calls for extensive knowledge and expertise. So, it’s a problem that you’ll probably require a skilled technician to solve.
In early 2020, Porsche started a recall related to a gasoline leak that affects all vehicles made between 2014 and 2019. This is the third time the Macan has undergone a recall.

The Audi Q5 and Porsche Macan both use the same platform. The Macan’s engine, transfer case, suspension tuning, interior, and appearance are all exclusive to Porsche. The Macan’s wheelbase and suspension layout are based on and significantly modified from the Audi. Additionally, it is 1.8 inches (46 mm) lower than a Q5, 1.4 inches (36 mm) broader, and 1.7 inches (43 mm) longer.
