A New Entry-Level Porsche 911 Is Available… But It’s PDK-Only
Welcome to the most recent development in the Porsche 911’s development. The new entry-level Carrera, which will replace the previous base model of the 911 series, has been shown in all its (relatively) simple splendor.
Funny how the most affordable and understated sports car in a lineup is frequently the best one. The minimal-frills Carrera has, in our opinion, been the greatest real-world 911 for the past few generations of the model, despite the true pleasure and speed that more expensive choices may provide. It’s Porsche’s new, er, more inexpensive way to get into a new 911, and it’s yours in either Coupe or Cabriolet body types. The soft-top is a hefty PS92,438 while the Coupe is up for bid for PS82,793.
Despite being the range entry point, it is not at all docile. A 3.0-liter, twin-turbo flat-six with 380 horsepower at 6500 rpm—15 horsepower more than the previous model—is located at the back, nestled further forward than ever. The Porsche Wet Mode, which is new to the Carrera, at least seeks to prevent you from abandoning it in torrential downpours where there is standing water that could cause a driver to aquaplane.
Performance is commensurately quick, in part because to the new 992’s PDK-only design, which is a genuine shame because the manual 991.2 Carrera’s manual cog whisk made for an amazing joy to drive. The Cabriolet weights an acceptable 70kg more than the Coupe, which weighs 1505kg when empty. The Cabriolet suffers from the weight penalty in acceleration, falling 0.2 seconds short at 62 mph and 0.9 seconds short at 124 mph.
According to Porsche, the inside is nearly identical to the Carrera S’s. Only the (still central) rev counter is now analogue; even that has been relegated to the outer rim of the dial; the middle is now dominated by a digital screen. There is a renewed drive toward digital displays.
