The G37 is a model from the Infiniti G-Series that was produced from 1991 to 2016. It is a discontinued model. The “G” prefix is derived from the GT (Grand Turismo or Grand Touring) classification, which combines luxury and high performance. Thus, Infiniti, Nissan’s luxury arm, launched a line of small, luxurious cars under the G-Series brand. If the G-Series model’s age surprises you, it’s possibly because the G logo wasn’t initially attached to them.
On the Nissan Primera platform, the P-Series 10 and 11 sedans made up the first two versions. We’re driving the slightly more extreme G37 GT S, which combines a limited slip differential, stronger suspension, and, somewhat oddly, a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters with Nissan’s 3.7-liter, 316bhp V6 (though a manual is offered, too). It is a speedy vehicle with a top speed of only 155 mph and a 62 mph acceleration time of little under two seconds.
It has a distinctive drivetrain, with a V6 that is almost as grunty and throaty as the one in the Nissan 370Z. The engine feels distinctively outdated in comparison to BMW’s powerful sixes, but it makes up for it by oozing a touch of muscle-car thuggery. However, it is extremely thirsty: in a few weeks of not driving ballistic, we averaged just over 20 mpg; with a 330i, you could anticipate 50% better.
The automatic transmission makes things worse in terms of economy and appears to dull the V6’s aggressive, raspy nature, which begs for a heavy clutch and short-shifting gearlever. A flappy paddle system similar to the DCT would be a nice compromise, but Infiniti doesn’t currently offer one.
However, despite the G37’s transmission’s shortcomings, it is entertaining to talk about. The steering has nice weight, albeit not quite the smoothness of the 3-Series, and the G’s reflexes have an unapologetically rear-drive feel, which makes it seem very much like the bigger brother of the 370Z. The Infiniti compensates for its lack of the delicate reaction of a 3-Series with outstanding highway poise and a well-balanced ride that is firm but well-damped.
Even though the PS35k list price appears substantial, you receive a ton of equipment as standard, including leather, reversing cameras, and a ton of electrical equipment. Though a little schizophrenic, the cabin has a dead-solid overall vibe that, paradoxically, adds to the Infiniti’s appeal.
Because that is how the G37 sells itself: by mixing the mundane, Teutonic elements with a dash of eccentricity. Although it isn’t quite as ruthlessly effective and polished as its Audi and BMW competitors, it’s still worth a look if you want a little personality along with your dependability. It’s not often that you can say that about a high-end Japanese vehicle.
