A sign on the first and tenth tees stated, “Live. Learn. Love. Lead” was the motto of Robb Elementary School.

People who have experienced travelling in a team van on the way home from a tournament had a heartbreaking reaction when the head coach and six players from a small New Mexico institution perished in a nocturnal head-on crash in West Texas on March 15. They tease, they laugh, they tell stories, and then they drift off into beautiful sleep.
After a tournament, Sarah Kellam observed, “You never get into a van and expect something like this to happen. Since the fifth grade, I’ve played golf on teams. You recall all the times you have performed tasks while riding in a van. The men’s and women’s teams at my institution were pretty close. They are some of your closest pals. In those vehicles, you have some of your favorite memories.
Kellam attended the University of Northern Kentucky and joined the LPGA Tour media team last fall. Kellam was moved to pay tribute to the University of the Southwest golf team after the collision that also claimed the lives of a father and son riding in the other car. She brought up the notion of participants donning ribbons for this week’s JTBC Classic in northern San Diego with her supervisors. Kellam was unaware that the Epson (previously Symetra) Tour was making a comparable gesture at the Carlisle Arizona Women’s Golf Classic last week.
The LPGA was in favor of the proposal, so during the opening round of the JTBC on Thursday at Aviara Golf Club, golfers were given a ribbon with Southwest’s school colors of blue and red. Kellam made 70 additional ribbons with the help of JTBC volunteers on Wednesday after assembling 230 alone.
