6. Attach the drain plug manually when the oil has stopped draining (if at all, it should only be trickling slightly). Plug bolt should be 18 ft-lbs tightened with microtorque wrench.
7. Carefully pry the old gasket from the oil filter cap using a little screwdriver.
8. Use fresh oil to lubricate the kit’s new gasket. Next, carefully lower it where the last one was fastened. It will travel within the groove as depicted in the image.
9. Replace the old filter there, pushing down until it is firmly in place (it won’t move around very easily).
10. Lay the cover down and begin manually tightening it. Finally, use a microtorque wrench to tighten it to 18 ft-lbs.
11. Add 6.5 quarts of oil to the engine with caution. Once you are completed, ensure sure there is oil visible on the dipstick by checking it. (If there isn’t any, check under the car to make sure it isn’t there.)
12. Start the car, put the oil filler cap on, and check for leaks. After around 1-2 seconds, the red oil light ought to turn off. If it doesn’t, turn off the automobile right away because this indicates a problem.
13. Lower the car to the ground (remove it from the lift, ramps, or jack stands), then check the level to make sure the dipstick is about halfway up.
14. Travel spiritedly for 6500 miles before your next oil change.

You must use entirely synthetic oil that has been approved by BMW LL01. Castrol Edge 0w30 or Mobil1 SuperSyn 0w40 are the two best.
However, if the engine has traveled a lot of miles and is consuming oil at an absurd pace, these are far too thin. With no harm to the engine, switching to a 10W40 or even 15W40 can save oil usage.
They are the ones that BMW advise, your local BMW dealer will use if you have your car serviced there, and I use in both a 60k-mile Z4 3.0i and a 160k-mile 530i with no problems at all.

I only hope that yours is one of the ones with a less voracious thirst for oil. Without wanting to be a doom-munger, some 330i models might run out of oil if they were 2,000 miles from the next service and hadn’t had a top-off since the previous one.
When topping off, I use the semi-syn 10w40 that my indie uses. At roughly PS20 for 5 litres, Mobil S from Halfrauds is a decent value. With a 15k service interval, I estimate that I go through just over one of those in between each service.
BMW recommends Mobie 1 (SuperSyn)fully synthentic 0w40, and after over 70k miles, my engine still looked and ran as good as new.
