The new 2022 BMW iX and i4 models now integrate with the company’s 5G network, thereby enabling customers to use their cars as a massive Wi-Fi hotspot. T-Mobile and BMW are collaborating to introduce the first 5G-connected automobiles available in the United States.

Even if you don’t have a phone with you, your BMW will be able to receive unlimited data and voice conversations with a $20 monthly addition to your T-Mobile plan. (SMS is not provided, though.) Additionally to unlimited data in the US, T-Mobile subscribers also receive 200MB of roaming data, 5GB of 4G data per month in Canada and Mexico, and unlimited data at T-standard Mobile’s international speed of up to 128kbps. If you are traveling outside of the US or in an area where T-network Mobile’s is not available, you can still use data at this speed.

Because the new BMW models include an eSIM, which is akin to an LTE-connected timepiece, you won’t have to fuss with a little SIM card to link your car. Additionally, if you’re signed into your BMW account, you’ll be able to bring your service with you to other vehicles. This means that even if you rent a 5G-compatible BMW while on vacation, you’ll be able to connect to T-internet. Mobile’s

T-Mobile claims that you will be able to simultaneously connect up to 10 devices to your automobile. While using your car as a hotspot for $20 a month isn’t exactly inexpensive, it is, in some cases, less expensive than purchasing a specialized 5G hotspot from T-Mobile. T-Mobile charges $336 for a standalone 5G hotspot up front, plus $50 per month for 100GB of data. In contrast, a BMW offers unlimited 5G data for just $20 every month. A BMW iX with 5G starts at $87,025, whereas an i4 starts at $55,700 (due to the $300 add-on for 5G compatibility), so you are paying significantly more for the hardware.

By no means are T-Mobile and BMW the only carriers and automakers attempting to combine 5G and cars: In order to expand support in 2024, Verizon and Audi are collaborating, as are GM and AT&T. As a result, there’s a good chance that there will be many more 5G car announcements in the months to come.

Does BMW offer Apple CarPlay for a fee?

Due to the carmaker switching its chip supplier, BMW is temporarily shipping new vehicles without Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability (via Automotive News Europe).

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto require updated software to function on the new CPUs found in many BMWs produced this year. Dealerships are advising BMW customers who purchase a new vehicle without CarPlay to wait for an over-the-air upgrade that will add the feature “by the end of June at the latest.”

It’s unclear how many BMW models are impacted, but a lot of consumers in the UK, France, Italy, and the US have complained online about receiving new cars without CarPlay. Models that are affected have the specification code “6P1” in them.

While some BMW owners may have to temporarily do without CarPlay capability, BMW is moving chip suppliers to enhance its supply chain over the long run, which could help to alleviate component shortages in the second half of the year.

With support for Digital Key, Ultra Wideband Digital Key Plus, and a feature-rich dual-screen wireless CarPlay experience, BMW provides one of the most integrated experiences with Apple’s ecosystem. The value of BMW ConnectedDrive

What benefit does connectedDrive provide that I don’t already receive through Apple Car Play, which I use in my car for GPS, music, etc.?

I’m curious about your experience with it and whether you believe it’s worth renewing.

I paid $150 for the L package and am also from Australia. In my X3, I also have CarPlay. After using both for some time, I would advise against spending additional money on ConnectedDrive. You do have access to features like traffic updates, online tools, updated maps, remote supervision, and—most importantly—navigational guidance in HUD. You might wish to purchase that package if you consider any of those to be important. But I’ve found that Apple Maps, Google Maps, and Waze are all better at routing than the built-in maps now that I commute every day during rush hour, when better navigation routing can be useful. In terms of aesthetics, voice guidance, and HUD integration, I still prefer the built-in maps the best, but the routing is simply ineffective. I have recently stopped using BMW maps totally. CarPlay’s calling interface, which fills the full screen, is its only drawback. BMW has made many good interface choices, but sadly, a connection to navigation routing is not one of them. If only the routing was on pace with other major providers, I would love to use BMW maps and would gladly pay for them.

Can a mobile hotspot be used in a vehicle?

You can take a dedicated hotspot with you and utilize it everywhere, including inside a car, which is its fundamental advantage over other approaches. Although they weren’t created with automobiles in mind, most hotspots can connect to the USB ports and 12-volt accessory outlets found in most current vehicles.

Is BMW ConnectedDrive uncomplicated?

All eligible BMW vehicles with the software installed are eligible for free registration with ConnectedDrive. For three years, most BMW vehicles come standard with it. BMW offers the majority of the Digital Services capabilities separately or as a trial since it understands that not all owners will want or require all of the ConnectedDrive functions.

The majority of these have different prices, ranging from PS1 for a one-month trial of real-time traffic data to PS79 for a map update for the My Journey system. BMW, on the other hand, offers four ConnectedDrive packages that range in price from PS59 to PS239 and run for a full year. As the price rises, each bundle includes more ConnectedDrive features.

Only BMWs with the most recent OS7 infotainment system and up receive Apple CarPlay for free, which may surprise some BMW owners. When their BMWs reach their third anniversary, some owners will still be required to pay up to PS265 for Apple CarPlay. In 2020, BMW vehicles finally offered Android Auto connectivity as an option, providing wireless integration to the vehicle’s infotainment system at no additional cost.
