It’s simple to forget that driving can be enjoyable with the increase in traffic congestion, tighter speed limits, and the stress of daily driving! Our vacation to North Wales on a peaceful Sunday morning is my concept of paradise, albeit I don’t choose my ideal travel partner lightly.

What I need is an automobile that appeals to all of my senses: it needs to look amazing, feel great, and sound terrific. A convertible is also necessary to truly appreciate the sights, sounds, and fragrances of the countryside on the winding roads that surround Bala.

Finding the perfect mate didn’t take me very long. The Porsche Boxster checks all the appropriate boxes with its mid-engined design and straightforward aesthetics. I adore the technical packaging and aesthetics, and I’m consistently impressed by the brand’s build quality. You can tell right away that this is a terrific driver’s car the moment you step inside. The Boxster’s superbly weighted controls feel engaging even during the long drive to the Welsh border.

The sharpness of the turn-in, the almost unbreakable traction, and the subtle steering feedback make it a revelation once on a winding road. The fact that this car rewards your effort and gets more alive the better your skills are what means it to me even more. Simply put, the Boxster is among the most secure and engaging drivers’ vehicles money can buy.

The six-cylinder boxer engine is the last component. The Boxster S, in my opinion, offers the ideal amount of power for UK roads—just enough to handle any situation without feeling overly confined by posted speed restrictions.

However, I didn’t select a Porsche Boxster for our vacation; instead, I opted for the limited-edition RS60 Spyder, which adds to the exclusivity. Only 1,960 of these vehicles will be produced, and it is named after the Porsche 718 RS60 Spyder that won the legendary Sebring 12 Hours endurance event in 1960. The red roof and interior of this particular Boxster pay respect to the 718, and it is coated in traditional German racing silver, just like its racing forebear.

The RS60 Spyder legend is printed on the door kickplates inside, and it is further distinguished by a black windscreen surround and red taillights. Each car’s position in the production run is verified via a plaque on the dashboard.

Another aspect of Porsche genius to appreciate on our Sunday morning drive is the sound produced by the tuned sports exhaust system. Simply depress a button on the dash, and the exhaust baffles open to produce a magnificent wail over 5,000 rpm and a throaty burble at low revs. The redesigned tailpipes also contribute to a small 8bhp improvement in output to 303bhp.

This lovely soundtrack, in my opinion, completes the unique RS60 puzzle. It’s difficult to see how Porsche could have performed even better when the superb chassis balance, sensitive handling, and flawless engineering are taken into account. The Boxster S is a beautiful, musical, and comfortable vehicle. What more could one ask for?

Boxster RS60 Spyder by Porsche

Can you help? I’m looking for a Porsche RS60 Spyder, but costs seem to vary. A car with 10k miles had its price dropped from PS35k to PS32k at Porsche Centre Bristol, and it was sold the same day. A specialist in Wiltshire has an automatic for sale for PS29k, Porsche Centre Guildford has a car with 15k miles for sale for PS34k, and a specialist close to me has a car with 6k miles for sale that I would like to view, but it’s PS35k. How do you feel?

3 years ago, a special edition Boxster cost PS45,000. I wouldn’t even look at the car. They don’t, in my opinion, have the investment potential that the suppliers hope for. Better to spend PS34k on a more recent Boxster S or Cayman S if you want a car to utilize.
