Although their real laps weren’t timed perfectly, the producer’s skillful film editing has given us a close-to-synchronized experience with the cockpit view and engine sounds.

Jani recorded a lap time of 1:41.7%, but Porsche only released an onboard of a 1:43.5% lap, so the YouTuber sped up their video by roughly 102%, which increased the lap time to 1:41.7. Hamilton, meanwhile, finished the 4.35-mile circuit in 1:41.25, and you can see him barely holding on in the video.

The Spa lap record for the Porsche 919 Evo has already been surpassed.

Lewis Hamilton’s lap record was beaten by the Porsche prototype in April by 0.783 seconds. But now an F1 car once again owns the record for fastest lap time.

Porsche constructed the high-downforce 919 Hybrid Evo to bid farewell to its three-time Le Mans-winning LMP1 car. This car is intended to shattered lap records. And the first one has already been broken. The 919 Evo, driven by factory driver Neel Jani, broke Lewis Hamilton’s previous lap record of 1:42.553 this morning by clocking a 1:41.7 lap around Spa Francorchamps.

Updated on August 28, 2018: This post was first released on April 11, 2018. On August 25, 2018, three Formula 1 drivers set a new lap record at Spa while practicing for the Belgian Grand Prix. Sebastian Vettel, the fastest of the three, set a time in his Ferrari SF71-H during the second round of qualifying that was 0.199 seconds quicker than the best time of the 919.

Although Porsche hasn’t made an on-board film of the lap available, trackside footage demonstrates the 919 Evo’s insane speed. It moves so quickly that it hardly seems like real life.

The 919 Evo was initially the vehicle that triumphed at Le Mans in 2017 but has since been exempted from the World Endurance Championship’s technical requirements. Its electric boost was increased from 400 hp to 440 hp, and its turbocharged V4 gas engine now produces 720 horsepower, up from 500 before. The 919 Evo received major aerodynamic improvements as too, producing 53% more downforce than previously. By the way, that has more downforce than an F1 car.

The 919 Evo weights little under a ton with Jani inside after weight was cut by 86 pounds. To handle the additional downforce, the suspension was improved, and Michelin also supplied a new tire.

Jani averaged 152.6 mph and reached a peak speed of 216.8 mph on the course. His 1:41.7 lap time was a startling 12 seconds quicker than the 919’s pole-setting lap at the circuit the previous year.

The best thing, though? Porsche is not finished. Next month, it will perform a demonstration lap on the Nordshliefe of the Nurburgring. Porsche’s plans are unknown, but it’s possible that the company has the record-breaking 6:11.13 lap from 1983 in mind.

GT: Is it quicker than F1?

Racing in F1 is substantially faster than in GT. This is partly attributable to the enormous amount of downforce that F1 cars can generate, which enables them to turn at speeds much faster than GT vehicles. The highest speeds of most GT cars are around 40 mph slower than those of F1 cars, though.
