The Macan sprints to 60 mph with the standard turbo four-cylinder in under 5.0 seconds. Speed enthusiasts will want to upgrade to the twin-turbo V-6-powered S or GTS variants, the latter of which generates 434 horsepower and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in under 3.5 seconds in our testing. It feels brisk around town. With a 3.8-second zero-to-60-mph time on our test track, the Macan S was only a few seconds slower than the more potent GTS. The Macan S and Macan GTS both clock in at much faster times than the Audi SQ5 and Jaguar F-Pace S. Although an SUV really doesn’t need to take off so swiftly, we definitely do appreciate it. A crossover with sporting aspirations needs to be quick, but the Macan’s all-around road prowess is what really makes us pleased. It has an amazingly sporty sedan-like feel about it. Rarely does the driver feel a jolt from the pavement because of how smoothly and meticulously the ride is managed. Although a little lighter than in Porsche’s sports cars, the steering is nonetheless incredibly accurate and wonderfully tactile.

However, when the Macan is unable to conceal its heft any further, issues may occur. If you go outside the Macan’s dynamic range, its superb grip and sharp front end could swiftly deteriorate into understeer.

With regard to the ride, the steel-sprung PASM setup (standard on the GTS) is more than enough for daily driving when in Comfort mode, but those anticipating a softened-off luxury 4×4 may be a little taken aback by how much harsher the Macan feels when in Sport mode. In fact, a Range Rover Velar would be a far more comfortable option if you want an SUV for commuting in.

A specific high point is the GTS. It delivers decent feedback through the hefty steering, is fast and responsive, and is best driven almost anywhere in Sport+. There is also a more interesting exhaust note with the occasional exhaust crackle. The smooth steering reaction and superb brake power and feel are especially appreciated given the vehicle’s weight. Even a little power oversteer is possible if you’re bold and there is plenty of room.

Although we would still choose a lighter, lower car for actual fun, there is a sense that the car is savagely bludgeoning the laws of physics into submission rather than gracefully bending as a lighter car might. Nonetheless, it is a profoundly remarkable exhibition.
