Hyundai Motor America sold 63,091 automobiles in the US in June, 13% fewer than in the same month last year. Additionally, the 343,867 autos sold so far this year represent a 16% decrease from last year.
Limited supply is Hyundai’s issue, just like it is for other manufacturers. “Our dealers are selling everything they get,” said Randy Parker, senior vice president of national sales at Hyundai Motor America. “We are continuing our efforts to expand market share.”
With 2,853 sales (4.5% of the total), the all-electric Hyundai Ioniq 5 set a new monthly record in June.
Sales of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 reached 7,448 in the second quarter (a new record), bringing the total to 13,845. This suggests that in 2022, 25,000–30,000 units should be feasible.

Hyundai Motor America sold 60,631 automobiles in the US in July, 11% fewer than in the same month last year. In addition, the year-to-date result is still negative at 404,498 automobiles (down 15% from last year).
The Ioniq 5, Hyundai’s flagship all-electric model, reported 1,978 sales in the previous month, or roughly 3.3% of the total.
Although the number of vehicles is limited, we had anticipated for a slightly greater outcome. We won’t notice noticeably better outcomes until South Korea’s production rises.
However, more than 15,000 Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicles have already been delivered to consumers in the US, and another 10,000–15,000 vehicles could be delivered by the end of the year, for a minimum of 25,000 vehicles overall.

Hyundai revealed its March sales figures, and while overall sales are down 17% from 2021, EV sales are up 105%.
We should emphasize, though, that Hyundai calculates its stats in a unique way compared to other manufacturers. Their figures include both wholesale sales outside of Korea and sales in South Korea.

These latest March figures show a pattern that we have observed across several manufacturers. Sales of plug-in hybrids are declining while those of battery electric vehicles are rising.
Additionally, the Ioniq 5 sold 2,871 automobiles in Europe and 2,700 automobiles in the US. How many were sold in Canada was not disclosed in the release.
The Ioniq 5 stats are disappointing, at the very least. Local Hyundai dealers said that while there is a demand, there aren’t enough vehicles to meet it. In my conversation with a nearby Ontario dealer yesterday, they estimated that if I ordered an Ioniq 5 today, I could anticipate receiving the vehicle in 16 to 24 months.
The Hyundai Ioniq is little or large?
When you look at pictures of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, you might think it’s a family hatchback that competes with models like the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf. However, appearances can be deceiving because it is really large in comparison to those cars.
Indeed, the Ioniq 5 is nearly as large as an Audi Q5 at 4.6 meters long and 1.6 meters height. In fact, the Audi A8 limousine’s three-meter separation between the front and back axles is shared by this vehicle, providing a tremendous amount of interior room for passengers.

Associate editor Bridie Schmidt works at The Driven, an Australian website that mostly covers EVs. She attempted to test the Hyundai Ioniq 5’s auto-park feature in a nearly empty parking lot, but things nearly got ugly when the vehicle attempted to park itself next to a classic muscle car.
The system has to “see” other vehicles using the sensors typically used for blind-spot monitoring and cross-traffic detection in order for it to function correctly. In this instance, the detected vehicle is a classic Holden Monaro muscle car, famous for repeatedly winning the Bathurst 1000km race in the 1970s.
The Hyundai begins by moving its wheels to position itself for a reverse maneuver, but it is immediately obvious that the attempt was doomed to failure. The EV almost beeps as it reverses, seemingly making no attempt to alter the steering angle as it heads right for the Monaro. The system briefly pauses, suggesting that it may be trying to reassess the issue, but it then resumes its almost destructive course.
Fortunately, the Ioniq 5 avoided hitting the antique muscle car by stopping, although approaching it by a few feet before deciding not to go any closer.
Bridie claimed that the Monaro’s owner had just parked it and entered a store. It’s a good thing they weren’t present to witness the Hyundai’s self-parking almost colliding with their vehicle.
In a separate auto-parking attempt, Bridie reports that the Toyota Camry worked virtually faultlessly. As a bystander observed of the incident: “I believe it is afraid of colliding with the Monaro. And I would be!”
How many electric cars has Hyundai offered for sale?
Hyundai NEXO, a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, reported 934 units (5,032 YTD). The Genesis GV60 BEV, which is powered by E-GMP, continues to sell over 1,000 units a month, hitting 1,125 last month (5,195 YTD). Additionally, the business observed 601 GV70 EV (1,654 YTD) and 626 G80 EV (2,099 YTD)
How long will it take to receive an Ioniq 5?

Currently, the delivery time for manufacturing orders might range from eight months to a year.
Ioniq 5: Is it larger than Kona?
The Kona Electric weighs in only 3,715 lbs, compared to the Ioniq 5’s substantial curb weight of 4,414 lbs. The Ioniq 5 is 183 inches long while the Kona Electric is 175 inches, which accounts for the difference in weight.
A shorter and lighter vehicle is more agile and maneuverable. At an amazing 56 mph and with a tight grip on the course, the Kona Electric performed well on Consumer Reports’ avoidance maneuver track. They added that the Kona Electric was faster than the gas-powered Kona and had responsive steering.
The Ioniq 5 performed well in Consumer Reports’ tests, although they did point out that the vehicle’s weight, which is brought on by its large EV battery, is occasionally apparent.
In the years to come, Hyundai’s already impressive lineup of EVs will only become better. By 2024, they intend to release more members of the Ioniq family, including the Ioniq 7, which will be their full-size SUV choice. In 2023, they’ll also start selling the Ioniq 6 sedan.
Two passenger cars and four SUVs will be added to Genesis, Hyundai’s luxury division, during the course of the next eight years. The Electrified GV70, which will debut this year, will be the first to be introduced. Beginning in 2025, every new Genesis will be electrified.
