After the initial shock of their new grilles subsided (if it ever does), many fans focused on the BMW M3 and M4’s weight, another area of contention. The new M3 and M4 are significantly and, in some circumstances, more heavy than their predecessors. Both automobiles do, however, feature a ton of new lightweight components and weight-reducing techniques, which limit the weight gain. In this new BMW M video, we precisely examine the new G82 BMW M4 to determine just how much heavier it is than the outgoing F82-generation vehicle.
The new G82 BMW M4 will weigh more than its predecessor, as is the case with all automotive predecessors. It now has to adhere to even tougher safety regulations and has grown in size and sophistication. So, the weight was always going to be greater. However, BMW M has worked very hard to minimize that weight gain. For instance, it may be ordered with optional aluminum door and hood skins, carbon fiber bucket seats, and even a lighter crankshaft.
However, in order to make the ordinary G20 3 Series and G22 4 Series M-ready, BMW M also had to stiffen the chassis, adding even more weight. To keep the chassis as rigid as possible, there is a significant amount of localized structural bracing beneath the hood and underneath the car. Despite using lightweight materials, BMW M still added weight with the bracing.
What is the true weight difference between the old and new cars, then? Although BMW M did not compare apples to apples, the weight difference is still not as significant as some aficionados may have believed. The new G82 BMW M4 has a significantly lighter six-speed manual transmission than the older F82 BMW M4 that was used in this weight comparison. The new manually operated, rear-wheel drive car weighed 1,674 kg (3,615 lbs), compared to the older model’s 1,640 kg (3,615 lbs) (3,690 lbs). Obviously, there was no significant rise, but BMW M did forget to mention anything.
Being a manual, rear-wheel drive car, the G82 BMW M4 utilized in this video was the lightest M4 ever. When outfitted with the all-wheel drive, the eight-speed automatic gearbox, and the regular seats, the G82 M4 really crests just north of 1,800 (4,000 lb). Therefore, if correctly equipped, the manual M4 is very slightly lighter than the original M4, which is excellent. However, the bulk of M3 and M4 buyers will opt for an automatic or all-wheel drive vehicle, and those vehicles are much heavier (some markets, such as the UK, will only be getting those versions for now).
Even so, it’s encouraging to note that the G82 BMW M4 isn’t as hefty as we had previously assumed, provided you order it with the right options, like rear-wheel drive, a manual gearbox, and light seats.

The 2021 BMW M4 gallery
The standard model of the new M4 weighed 1,674 kg when it had a full tank of gas and no driver (3,690 pounds). The previous generation’s two-pedal M4 Competition weighed 1,640 kg (3,615 lbs). Sure, 34 kg (75 lbs) isn’t much for a car that is already very hefty, but if you include in the newcomer’s automated ‘box, the difference between the two becomes more noticeable.
In actuality, according to BMW’s official specifications sheet, the new auto-only M4 Competition weights 1,725 kilograms (3,803 lbs). When equipped with the automatic, the previous rear-wheel-drive M4 Competition weighed 1,540 kg (3,395 lbs). Now that the AWD system is included, the difference rises to 185 kg (408 lbs), which is much higher.
The new BMW M4 is more powerful and benefits from other improvements to try and balance the weight gains, so it’s not all bad news. However, one of the main reasons many enthusiasts believe the M2 to be the final holdout of what a true M car should be is because it’s becoming chunkier.

This year marks BMW M’s 50th anniversary, and there is no better way to commemorate the milestone than by announcing a new M4 CSL (Competition Sport Lightweight). The CSL adds 40 horsepower to the M3 Competition’s strong 503 horsepower while also removing 240 pounds from its curb weight. According to BMW, the 2023 BMW M4 CSL lapped the Nordschleife in 7:20.2, making it the fastest production BMW to do so.
Although the 543 horsepower is more than amazing for a small sport sedan, the true show-stopper here is the Competition model’s 240-pound weight loss. The CSL is only 3,640 pounds in weight. That is 20% more weight than the E46 M3 CSL, which introduced the carbon fiber roof to BMW M production vehicles. It’s a good thing the M4 has 50% more power because it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds while maintaining an electronically capped top speed of 191 mph. In actuality, the M4 Competition xDrive’s official statistic for acceleration to 60 mph weighs 3,979 pounds, which is 2/10ths slower than that. Off the line, all-wheel drive is really important.
The CSL’s peak engine torque stays at 479 pound-feet even if it has higher power. The additional 5.8 pounds of boost (for a total of 30.5 psi) and revised engine management for higher-RPM power delivery account for the CSL’s forty additional horsepower. A new set of strengthened engine mounts and a lightweight (go figure) titanium exhaust are also included, both of which should enhance response and feel. Extreme steps were required to remove an entire American from the M4, to the point where BMW cut the number of seats available in half in an effort to reduce mass. You get a useful tiny helmet storage nook and coordinating cargo net in place of the back seats.
Even though that is one of the M4 CSL’s most glaring concessions to reducing curb weight, it is by no means the entire picture. The CSL’s hood, top, trunk lid, and remaining bucket seats are all made of carbon fiber. 53 of the 240 pounds that BMW removed from the curb weight of the Competition are made up by those svelte thrones. Another 33 were saved by lighter and more sparingly applied sound insulation, and another 46 were saved by its lighter wheels, carbon ceramic brakes, and forged chassis components. BMW even made the grille smaller. Believe we’re kidding?
According to BMW’s release, the kidney grille is “model-specific, weight-minimized BMW, with fewer slats and vast intervals between them boosting airflow to the radiators.” The distinctive grille has “M4 CSL” badging and red contour lines.
In order to account for its lighter weight, the CSL rides lower than the standard M4 Competition and has its unique Adaptive M Suspension tuning. Helper springs were placed front and back to maintain the rigid primary springs in place when the suspension is in full droop, improving the linearity and predictability of dynamic transitions. To decrease compliance and enhance damper response, ball joints were also used in place of the rubber control arm mounts on the rear subframe. Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires in the sizes 275/35ZR19 up front and 285/30ZR20 out back complete the CSL package.
When the 2023 BMW M4 CSL goes on sale later this year, the sticker price will be $140,895, but we anticipate real-world transaction pricing to be far lower than that. 1,000 units will be produced in total, starting in July. Good fortune.
