BMW says it would invest $200 million and create 200 jobs at its factory in Spartanburg County.

BMW revealed on Wednesday that it would be investing $200 million and adding 200 new jobs to its Spartanburg County operations by building a new press plant.

According to a press statement from BMW Manufacturing, the announcement was made by Robert Engelhorn, President and CEO, at the South Carolina Automotive Summit in Greenville.

In a statement, Engelhorn stated that “this investment strengthens BMW’s commitment in the United States and South Carolina.” “We continue to play a significant role in workforce development and job training in the region,”

Beginning in the summer of 2024, manufacturing at the new 219,000-square-foot press shop will involve reducing raw steel coils into blanks and stamping sheet metal components for upcoming BMW vehicles.

It was not immediately clear when hiring for the new positions will start or what the new positions will pay.

According to the press release, the press shop needed manufacturing jobs with advanced training. These positions include line operators with specialized training, electrical and mechanical maintenance for automated machines, and tool and die technicians.

At the moment, more than 45 workers from Plant Spartanburg are undergoing training at the Leipzig, Germany, and Swindon, England, press shops of the BMW Group. Additionally, they will receive training from associates of the Schuler Group, a business that creates automated servo press lines for all BMW Group operations.

As part of BMW’s localization plan, Engelhorn said, “having a press shop on-site means we can make our key components right where they are needed.” This assures that our customers receive body shop parts of the highest quality, effectiveness, and consistency.
