Therefore, I recently purchased a used 2015 Macan S that included a Key FOB. The vendor quoted me a price of about $650 plus tax. Here is a detailed explanation of how I managed to do it for $130. YMMV.

There are many of reasons not to attempt this: you might damage trims (I did), removing the trims would take a few hours, you might not feel comfortable sending your BCM module to a complete stranger on YouTube, the area under the dash is somewhat confined and gloomy, and so on.

  • Cutlery puller
  • T25 Torx bit
  • removers for plastic trim
  • Used Porsche Key purchased from eBay should operate with any 3 or 4 button remote.
  • eBay’s blank blade

Steps:

Take the hood release off. The back of the assembly has a plastic tab. Release the plastic tab (goes towards the engine). Pull the hood release slowly this time, in the direction of the passenger door.

2. Raise the sill trim on the door. Several clips are holding it in place, thus the trim puller tools should be helpful. Pull out slowly, starting at the thin end (close to the driver’s seat).

3. Set away the entire trim piece when it has been removed.

4. The trim that covers the lower side of the steering column must now be removed.

5. On either side of the airbag, under the trim, are two more T25s. Remove those as well.

6. Use the puller tool to move the vent close to the screen. Be like me and don’t break a vent. Your life will be much easier with the puller.

7. The final T25 holding the panel can be found inside that cavity (the hole without a screw in the picture below). Remove it, of course.

8. Move about and detach the clips with your trim tool. You may wish to exercise caution.

9. You must remove the cables after the trim becomes loose. There is only one connector on the steering wheel’s right side (the yellow cable in the picture above)..

In my opinion, it is crucial to have a third key FOB so that you can start the vehicle in the event that the one you regularly use is accidentally misplaced. I have been purchasing an extra (third) FOB for each of my cars since wallet keys that can start the vehicle are no longer provided. I keep this FOB well apart from the one in my pocket to reduce the likelihood that both will be accidentally lost at the same time. I regularly travel without my second FOB because it is in my girlfriend’s backpack and she isn’t always with me while I’m away from home.

The BMW dealer demanded $225 (on top of the $325 price of the new FOB) to program new FOBs for both of my BMW X3s. It turns out that a new BMW FOB can be readily programmed by starting the car while holding it next to the right position on the steering column for a FOB that is already programmed. The “needed” fees for computer programming imposed by the vendor are not necessary.

Now that I have my new Boxster, I must purchase a third FOB. I will undoubtedly need to pay $474 for this FOB through the parts department, which is to be expected. However, it would be good to avoid paying the dealer the additional $160 to $180 that he maintains is required to program it (plus a 150 mile round trip to the dealer just to do this).

Before I shell out even more money for the enormous bottle of Vaseline that will also be necessary if the dealer needs to do this, I want to make sure the new Porsche FOB must be programmed using the dealer’s computer.

Who is able to program a Porsche key fob?

Up to the most recent models, key fob programming can be done independently by someone having access to PIWIS III and a Porsche contract (we do it for clients). From 981/991 onward, this connectivity to the Porsche servers for key fob programming has been available.

Sadly, there aren’t too many independents using the more recent diagnostic tools.

I just spoke with a reputable and established neighborhood independent store. They could program a new key FOB using local software up until recently, however Porsche recently modified the process. It seems that a dealer is now the only one who can do it, and all the dealer really needs to do is connect the automobile to their computer. The vehicle’s computer then links to a Porsche server in Germany, and all security data, etc., required for activation and FOB verification are handled directly between the car and Germany. I was informed that the forms, which were previously filled out with all the security information verification, are no longer in use.

I also discovered that going to a well-known neighborhood shop with ties to a nearby dealership is far less expensive than doing so. A new FOB would cost $474.90, according to the parts guy at my selling dealer, and activation would add another $160 to $180. By using the neighborhood independent shop, which will also set up a meeting with a nearby dealership to activate it, I will save more than $200. They said the actual procedure only takes about 35 minutes.
