What functions do CarPlay dongles have?

And that’s when I learned about wireless CarPlay dongles. They connect to the smart USB-A or USB-C connector in your automobile. Normally, the smartphone that is plugged in will show up on the screen. A middleman, the wireless dongle uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to link your smartphone to the dashboard. So there is no need to plug in, just get in the car and go.

The market is currently inundated with these wireless adapters. There are probably just a few number of actual product developers licensing the designs because they all seem remarkably similar. You can find a ton of “brand names you’ve never heard of before” on Amazon by searching for terms like Drimfly, Zeteade, Teeran, Vrriis, Binize, and Loadkey. Additionally, some, like CarlinKit and Pairr, you may have seen in advertisements on TikTok or Instagram. Many adaptor brands only engage in direct sales instead of selling on Amazon; these products generally ship from abroad and take days or weeks to arrive.

We examined seven devices from five different vendors, and each time we had a similar experience. All of them agree that once your phone is plugged in, you’ll enjoy how simple wireless CarPlay or Android Auto are. In contrast to using the direct wired connection, there is a tiny delay between pressing a button on the screen and when it replies (for instance, while pausing a song).

One more caution: Once your adapter is operational, leave the settings alone. Continue reading to learn why.

The 2017 Maxima is Apple CarPlay compatible.

Nissan is starting from the top down with its embrace of Apple CarPlay. This smartphone connectivity function is first available in a Nissan or Infiniti vehicle, the 2017 Maxima sedan, which Nissan refers to as its “flagship.” Nissan promises that the NissanConnect infotainment system will soon support Android Auto, and that the rest of its portfolio will soon have CarPlay as well. As additional Nissan cars transition into the 2017 model year, these features should be implemented.

Given that every 2017 Nissan Maxima sedan will have the same 8.0-inch touchscreen panel as standard equipment, CarPlay compatibility should be standard across the board. The Murano crossover, which shares the same 8.0-inch NissanConnect system as the Maxima, may be the next vehicle to gain CarPlay, according to a Nissan spokesman. Is Apple CarPlay available on the 2017 Nissan Altima?

The Altima’s so-good-it’s-nearly-invisible CVT gives a smooth drive with great fuel economy, and the car is quite the looker, too.

The Bottom Line

The Nissan Altima is a great compromise that can provide drivers a little bit of both if they couldn’t decide between sporty and comfortable.

Everything about the Nissan Altima for 2017 is the same, except the pricing.

Editors’ note, December 23, 2016: The 2016 Nissan Altima was used as the basis for this assessment. See above for the 2017 model year’s changes (or total lack thereof).

After spending a week behind the wheel of Nissan’s updated Altima, I’ve come to the conclusion that the Altima achieves a fair compromise between those two extremes. Roadshow has spent some time in the recent weeks with midsizers that are both sporty and soft.

Both the softness and harshness are just right. It’s not completely dull, nor is it overly raunchy. I won’t go through the entire Goldilocks comparison. You understand where this is going, I’m sure.

One heck of a refresh

As part of a midcycle facelift for the 2016 model year, Nissan gave its venerable middle grounder everything but the kitchen sink. The most of the action occurs in front of the A-pillars, where the Altima’s appearance is similar to the new Maxima, despite the fact that the rear end has been somewhat sharpened.

Personally, I believe that the fusion of fashion under Maxima is a very positive development. The “V Motion” grille gives the front end a pleasing shape, and the headlamp and front fender curves make the car appear considerably more powerful than it did previously. Nissan has done a fantastic job here giving the Altima a beefier design that puts it near to other sportier-looking vehicles, such as the Mazda6, in a sector that is full of competitors but not all of which has style points.
