The hood now has a few vents, and the trailing edge of the front wheel well has a wing-like vent with another N insignia above it. The i30 N’s larger wheels are used, and the car appears to be lowered. The design is completed by black trim in place of chrome and red highlights on the bumpers and side skirts.
The Sonata N’s potential powertrain is even more of a mystery. A base normally aspirated four-cylinder engine and an upgraded turbocharged inline-four, most likely the current 1.6-liter engine found in the Sonata Eco, will be available in the ordinary Sonata. It would make sense for Hyundai to reserve a more potent 2.0-liter inline-four turbocharged engine, possibly the same one as the Veloster N’s 250 or 275 horsepower engine, for use in a performance variant. The Sonata N-Line, Hyundai’s newest trim level for the Elantra GT, could employ the 2.0-liter engine instead, which would mean the full-bore Sonata N might get an even more formidable, larger-displacement turbo-four.
No matter the engine, the hot Sonata would almost certainly only be able to transmit power through an eight-speed automatic and front-wheel drive, with little chance of either. The Sonata N package would include modifications to the suspension, larger brakes, a limited-slip differential, a redesigned exhaust system, and model-specific driving modes.
