I think the X5 is only suitable for light off-road use. It lacks skid plates, extensive suspension travel, and low range gearing, all of which are necessary for what I would consider true off-road driving. With its all-wheel drive traction and high ground clearance, the X5 is capable of light off-roading with ease.

DS I read your blog about your off-roading adventures, and I did shift into first gear. It did indeed assist. I managed to climb the frozen hill that was covered in snow up to the center of the wheels and was worse than the slope in the picture you showed from last year. simple task for X5. BUT I was unable to exit the deep rut when I had to turn onto my driveway (i was a country road). Although my front wheels were pointed to the right, the X5 would simply continue straight up past my driveway if I didn’t fire the tires. My father was simply laughing at me since he never got trapped in Moldova, even though his automobile had low gear. I had to trek through that heavy snow to get to the hut. I didn’t cross the road since I was certain that nobody would go up that hill that day.
I’m still unsure of how low range would benefit you; I believe the most crucial factor in ice and snow are the tires. But again, down here, we don’t get much of that.
