My understanding is that the speed restriction is set to 145 mph, although an E90Poster in Europe who had a tune (with a speed delimiter) and aftermarket suspension claimed in a discussion from a while ago that he had tested the top speed of his 335i at 184 mph or something like.
184 mph is unattainable with stock turbos. In sixth gear, that would be 6600 rpm. Only if you drop one out of an airplane can our autos reach that speed. A high speed would be 160 mph. Achieving 170 or 180 mph requires an exponential increase in horsepower. Due to drag restrictions, these cars are not intended to travel so quickly.
I believe your drag figures are incorrect. With a frontal area of just 2.12 m2 and a cd of 0.28, 184 may very well show up in your GPS under the right circumstances. Please re-do the math.
With the exception of a little adjustment for tire deflection, math as RPM is unquestionable.
