In a test program with BMW, ONE’s backer, the business said its battery will be fitted in a BMW iX electric SUV:

By the end of the year, BMW and ONE hope to finish the iX test car, which should have a range of roughly 600 miles (965 km) on a single charge.

The new electric SUV from BMW is unattractive and boring, but appearances can be deceiving.

The iX SUV is the first new electric vehicle produced by BMW. Finally, I say, because the minuscule and unimpressive i3, which made its debut in 2011, was the last product we heard about from BMW in terms of electric technology.

On the other side, the $83,200 iX has five seats and a driving range of more than 300 miles. Driving it is not thrilling like in a sports car. Even BMW’s X6M, one of my all-time favorite SUVs, misses some of its aesthetic characteristics. But despite its large size, it does offer a well-built, intelligently equipped cabin and responsive handling. The iX is comparable to a person who is merely respectable and whom you may consider dating for fun. For those loyal to the BMW brand who find themselves, against all chances, interested in purchasing an electric vehicle, it provides a competent means of navigating daily life.

First things first: The BMW iX does not appear as ugly in person as it does in pictures.

By no means does the iX give off the appearance of a supermodel. Its bent back portion appears to have been hurriedly put together by some Bavarian engineers. Even worse, from some perspectives, it appears to be the back of a minivan. It features those engorged black grilles that some in the peanut gallery have compared to a horrific caricature of beaver teeth; they are now only suggestive of the idea of BMW’s distinctive kidney grille. (This, as you’ll find in polite society, is a minority position; I’m not troubled that much by them, and there is plenty of historical precedent at BMW for such a hideous mien.) The steering wheel’s hexagonal design is terrible. Without the buck teeth and the thinly cut LED headlights, the entire thing would appear somewhat unoriginal.

Even so, when I picked up the iX early on September 9 at the Kempinski Hotel Berchtesgaden, I was astonished to notice that it looked better. I discovered that, despite its appearance, the iX is a capable, usable crossover-style EV that fully embodies BMW’s excellent craftsmanship and quality after a day-long drive through green Bavarian hillsides dotted with milk cows ambling around in bovine bliss, followed by a stop at BMW’s Group Plant at Dingolfing and then a drive to the Munich airport.

For wealthy buyers partial to the Bayerische Motor Works logo, it has taken BMW some time to catch up with Porsche, Audi, and Tesla in producing a premium electric family hauler, but the iX will have been worth the wait.
