BMW will test an electric SUV called the iX with a range of 600 miles (965 km), made possible by new battery technology from Our Next Energy (ONE).
Since ONE withheld information regarding the chemistry of its Gemini battery, which claimed to have a far better energy density, we were cautiously doubtful at the time.
Now that ONE is integrating its Gemini battery in an existing electric vehicle, there are still few information available regarding the chemistry, but at least it is working closely with the concerned automaker.
In a test program with BMW, ONE’s backer, the business said its battery will be fitted in a BMW iX electric SUV:
The BMW Group and Our Next Energy (ONE), an energy storage firm with headquarters in Michigan, have reached an agreement for ONE to integrate its GeminiTM Dual-Chemistry battery technology into the BMW iX all-electric Sports Activity Vehicle. With its special long-range Gemini technology, ONE uses 20% less lithium, 60% less graphite, and very little nickel and cobalt. By doing this, ONE is developing more environmentally friendly energy storage technology that has the potential to have a big influence on the environment.
To mark the occasion, ONE created the following teaser video, which does demonstrate that the battery pack uses a “dual battery chemistry,” with one section used for energy storage (LiMnO) and the other for power distribution (LiFePoc):

We are thrilled to be collaborating with BMW to show consumers our Gemini long-range battery technology. Drivers are becoming more aware that real-world conditions can dramatically lower the performance of their batteries as EV use rises. Electric vehicles face difficulties in everyday settings including maintaining highway speeds, freezing temperatures, climbing mountains, towing, or a combination of all four. We intend to increase battery capacity by two times so that EVs can successfully manage long-distance driving in practical situations.
High Voltage Storage Head at BMW Group New Technologies, Jurgen Hildinger, added:
We are in a good position to add ONE’s IP to the BMW SAV lineup. Given economic viability, we are convinced that this can result in business prospects and plans to include ONE’s battery technologies into prototypes of our future BEV product line-up.
By the end of the year, BMW and ONE hope to finish the iX test car, which should have a range of roughly 600 miles (965 km) on a single charge.
The new electric SUV from BMW is unattractive and boring, but appearances can be deceiving.
The iX SUV is the first new electric vehicle produced by BMW. Finally, I say, because the minuscule and unimpressive i3, which made its debut in 2011, was the last product we heard about from BMW in terms of electric technology.
On the other side, the $83,200 iX has five seats and a driving range of more than 300 miles. It’s not exhilarating to drive, like a sports vehicle. Even BMW’s X6M, one of my all-time favorite SUVs, misses some of its aesthetic characteristics. But despite its large size, it does offer a well-built, intelligently equipped cabin and responsive handling. The iX is like a just-plain-decent person you might try dating because, why not? For those loyal to the BMW brand who find themselves, against all chances, interested in purchasing an electric vehicle, it provides a competent means of navigating daily life.
First things first: The BMW iX does not appear as ugly in person as it does in pictures.
By no means does the iX give off the appearance of a supermodel. Its bent back portion appears to have been hurriedly put together by some Bavarian engineers. Even worse, from some perspectives, it appears to be the back of a minivan. It features those engorged black grilles that some in the peanut gallery have compared to a horrific caricature of beaver teeth; they are now only suggestive of the idea of BMW’s distinctive kidney grille. (This, as you’ll find in polite society, is a minority position; I’m not troubled that much by them, and there is plenty of historical precedent at BMW for such a hideous mien.) The steering wheel’s hexagonal design is terrible. Without the buck teeth and the thinly cut LED headlights, the entire thing would appear somewhat unoriginal.
Even so, when I picked up the iX early on September 9 at the Kempinski Hotel Berchtesgaden, I was astonished to notice that it looked better. I discovered that, despite its appearance, the iX is a capable, usable crossover-style EV that fully embodies BMW’s excellent craftsmanship and quality after a day-long drive through green Bavarian hillsides dotted with milk cows ambling around in bovine bliss, followed by a stop at BMW’s Group Plant at Dingolfing and then a drive to the Munich airport.
For wealthy buyers partial to the Bayerische Motor Works logo, it has taken BMW some time to catch up with Porsche, Audi, and Tesla in producing a premium electric family hauler, but the iX will have been worth the wait.

The automaker’s first widely available, long-range electric vehicle is the 2022 BMW iX. The iX and future i4 are completely electric, manageable versions that employ big lithium-ion batteries to power the front and back motors, in contrast to BMW’s early electrification experiments like the eccentric i3 and i8.
The 2022 BMW iX is a five-seat SUV that is the same size as the X5. However, we discovered that the BMW has enough of room for adults in the back seat, and the cargo area is also very spacious. The Audi E-Tron, Jaguar I-Pace, Tesla Model X, and the planned Cadillac Lyriq are competitors of the iX.

Of course, BMW would be remiss if it didn’t provide a more expensive model with the M label, designating that it belongs to the BMW Motorsport range of high-performance cars. In contrast to the xDrive50’s 516 horsepower and 564 pound-feet of torque, the iX M60 will be released later in 2022 and include two electric motors producing a combined 610 horsepower and up to 811 pound-feet of torque. According to BMW, it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in as little as 3.6 seconds and has an estimated 280-mile driving range.

Has BMW developed a hybrid SUV for 2022?
BMW’s M performance car division is commemorating its 50th birthday. And to commemorate the milestone, the firm unveiled the Concept XM, a super-SUV, rather than retro renditions of iconic vehicles like the M1 or E30 M3.
The Concept XM will be the first vehicle from BMW’s M division to be electrified. It will also be the first vehicle offered solely as a M automobile since the M1 sports car of 1978.
A hybrid system and a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine with a combined output of 750 horsepower and 737 lb-ft of torque power it. The car, which is intended to compete with other high-performance SUVs like the Range Rover Sport SVR, Jaguar F-Pace SVR, Audi RS Q8, and – take a deep breath, everyone – Porsche Cayenne Coupe Turbo SE-Hybrid, is at the top of the BMW lineup.
The sharp-dressed SUV, which is now only a concept, was unveiled at Art Basel’s 2021 Miami Beach show this week. It will likely have more subdued style when it enters series production by the end of 2022. The XM Concept, according to BMW, “provides a first view of the new front-end design for BMW’s next luxury-class cars.” That grille doesn’t appear to be getting any smaller any time soon.
BMW has stated that the production model of the XM will have an all-electric driving range of 80 kilometers (50 miles), but has not yet provided many other performance information. The vehicle includes a single electric motor that should be able to drive all four wheels automatically through an eight-speed transmission. Other forthcoming M vehicles, like as the successors for the M5, M8, X5 M, and X6 M, are likely to use this powerplant.
