Hello everyone, and I must say that I appreciate all the information you have provided over the past few months. I have been skulking and looking.
My 2007 Sonata Limited with the Infinity sound system is fantastic. The AUX selections on our head unit, however, are a little surprising as we don’t have a CD player or XM options!
After pulling the radio, I discovered only the antenna input and one harness input.
Without those two buttons on my head unit, my options seem “limited,” thus I wanted to add an aux jack.
So here’s my low-cost strategy:
From eBay, I bought a refurbished factory non-“infnity” 2008 radio single disc with XM. I’m going to put this in to check if it works with and power my speakers and subwoofer for the “premium sound” without any modifications. If so, the issue is fixed because I now have the PAC audio aux harness. Installed AUX If not, it’s time to start over and look for the “INFINITY” head unit with the XM button.
If everything else fails, I’ll spend around $1200 installing a new head unit, amp, and perhaps some new speakers to obtain “REAL” premium sound.
However, if anyone has the Infinite Sound head unit with an AUX input from PAC audio or anyone else with a head unit without an XM button on it, please let me know. Yes, I’ve looked everywhere but to no avail. Thanks!
A Hyundai Sonata’s Auxiliary Audio Input Is A Mistake
We don’t understand why auxiliary audio inputs haven’t been a regular feature on car head systems for so long. However, if you’re considering a cheap car, you can bet that you’ll need to purchase a complete upgrade kit in order to add an audio jack to the dashboard. [Jon W’s] He chose to remove his radio and add his own aux port because the Hyundai Sonata did not have that bells and whistles improvement.
Simply removing the head unit from the dash is a significant element of this hack. This is intentionally made challenging as an anti-theft measure, but [Jon’s] careful use of a butter knife seemed to work. A Shish Kebab skewer with double-stick tape on the end was used to rescue some of the little pieces that he lost along the route.
He removed the head unit, opened the box, and added the input using his expertise as an electrical engineer. He tried, but there doesn’t seem to be a miracle solution. There was no simple way to solder together an effective input in the unit’s setup. He wasn’t going to let the entire disassembling process go to waste. [Jon] snatched up an attractive FM transmitter set. As you can see, he put the interface components in the glove box and hooked everything up inside the dash.
It’s comforting to know we’re not the only ones who occasionally fail to accomplish our ostensibly straightforward hacking objectives. At least [Jon] was able to persevere and eventually get the functionality he required.
