1. Since Bluetooth was controversial in 2004, the construction year of your car will determine if it can support Bluetooth without any hardware adjustments. The cutoff date appears to be 03/2004 because all vehicles prior to that date were physically incapable because of a flaw in the TCU, or telematics control unit. Vehicles manufactured beginning in 2003 and continuing through the rest of the production year possessed the necessary physical capabilities, but a dealer software update was required to turn it on. I won’t go into how to find your build date or the necessary TCU/reprogram steps because these have already been covered in great detail.
2. Because your car already has a phone, you can use a snap-in adaptor to replace it. This emulates Bluetooth and, to be honest, seems like the less complicated and more affordable option. I had to use hardware because my device didn’t come with a phone, therefore This item is referred to as a BTUM upgrade, or something similar. If you look online, you can find many posts that discuss both.

In 2004 5 series cars, bluetooth is not available. I believe that versions from 2005 were the first to use Bluetooth. While my friend’s 2004 545i lacks bluetooth, my 2005 model does.
My 545, which I purchased in May 2004, has Bluetooth and syncs up with my RAZR quite nicely.
