Does 2018 BMW X5 Have 3rd Row?

The X5 is a 2-row SUV with seating for five passengers in its usual form. In some variants, a third row seat can be added to bring the overall number of passengers to seven.

First peek at the new BMW X5’s third-row seat

The Bavarians also provide a BMW X5 7 seater with a third-row seat for their customers while the BMW world waits for a true seven-seater in the form of the X7 SUV. Customers will receive rear seats with motorized fore-and-aft adjustment if the BMW X5’s optional third row seats are ordered.

The backrests of the second and third rows can be folded down and the second row seats can be moved forward or backward using a control panel in the cargo area. Electrical tilting of the second-row seats makes it simpler to enter and exit the two third-row seats.

By pressing a button on the side doors, passengers can also move the seats forward and backward and raise them slightly. The BMW X5 has a third row seat, but there is still enough space for a considerable quantity of cargo behind it. A fairly large room for cargo is created by lowering the third row.

We chose to test the features at the X5 International Media Launch this month because none of the official BMW X5 7 seater photographs or videos showed the third-row seat in the new SUV.

The images below demonstrate how the third-row seat operates as well as how much room there is for cargo when the seats are folded or raised.

  • 31.2 inches of legroom
  • 34.9 inches of headroom
  • 45.2 inches of shoulder room

The third-row seat, just like in the previous generation, is best for kids but may also be used by adults on shorter commutes.

Originally scheduled for December 2018, BMW delayed the third row and seven seats for the X5 until February 2019. The new BMW X7 7-seater SUV is in high demand, which is what caused the delay. The BMW X5 now has a third-row seat available.

F15 BMW X5

Since a dedicated third row of seating is not included as standard equipment, the BMW X5 is not a true seven-seater. A third row of seats was available for the F15 generation X5, although it was basically only two very tiny seats in the trunk. Those optional seats are uncomfortable for anyone who is not extremely small because it is not a true seven-seater.

However, the F15-gen X5 isn’t a bad alternative if someone has a small family and can fit two of their young children back there, especially given that secondhand ones can currently be found for reasonable costs. Simply look for one with the third row, which is an optional extra but admittedly not always simple to find.

Cargo, Comfort, and the Interior

The X5’s interior is pure BMW, from its high-quality materials to its straightforward control system. Glossy wood-grain trim in the xDrive35i test car gave the office-like interior a sophisticated touch, but if that’s not your thing, BMW also offers brushed aluminum and textured open-pore wood trims. With plenty of padding and multi-way power adjustable front seats that provide excellent support, the first and second rows of seats are comfortably supportive. As long as they are not forced into the optional third row, long distance drives in the X5 ought to be comfortable for both the driver and passengers. For the first row, automated climate control with dual zones is standard; upgrading to a four-zone system is optional. The heated front seats are standard, and heated rear seats and ventilated front seats are options. A power adjustable steering column aids in optimum positioning. The X5’s inside is lined with well chosen materials and features, albeit it isn’t the classiest or most fashionable in the segment. Nevertheless, it is a comfortable and (mostly) accommodating environment. There are considerably better solutions available for individuals who require a third row of seats. The third-row space in the X5 will be confined, even for small children, therefore we advise you to go on to something more roomy. The X5 has a secret weapon up its sleeve: much of its cargo volume is available with the second-row seats up. Cargo capacity with the second- and third-row seats folded is on the modest end of the mid-size crossover spectrum.

Even though I’m not very big—I’m only 5’9″ and weigh approximately 165 pounds—I can comfortably fit in the back of an X7 with headroom to spare and enough room for my knees so I won’t have to scramble to get out. And since I have claustrophobia, most people of my stature should be able to manage there as well.

The third row of the X7 is excellent for many reasons than just size. It boasts a designated climatic zone with its own climate controls, heated seats (optional), cupholders, and USB-C connections for charging smartphones and tablets, in addition to being big enough to suit an average-sized adult male. Therefore, the BMW X7 is about as accommodating as they get for families who need to fit four or five kids into the back of an SUV.

Yet, there’s more. The third row of seats in the X7 can be lowered with the push of a single button in addition to the fact that there is already good trunk room with the seats up. Additionally, there are two specific buttons: max sitting and max cargo, which allow for maximum seating room and maximum cargo space, respectively, by folding all the seats up and back.

Minivans are undoubtedly the most practical vehicle for large families, but the majority of people dislike them and some buyers prefer ultra-premium vehicles. These three BMW models might be for you if that’s the case.
