Can A BMW I3 Be Towed?

I now own a 2015 Sprinter 3500/Era with a 3 liter diesel engine, but I’m thinking of purchasing a 2017 BMW i3 with a range extender to use as a toad. Is it feasible to tow this four-down safely without modifying the toad? I am aware of BMW’s stance on this, but I am curious if there might be a solution. The other option would be to skip the new purchase and simply modify my 2014 X1 for four-down towing. Thoughts?

You eventually have to accept that some (or most) automobiles aren’t designed for hauling a trailer with four down seats.

We quickly concluded that our three-year-old Mercedes GLK 4Matic, which had only 20,000 miles on it, had to go when we made the decision to purchase our coach, our first RV. Just accepted the fact that it was part of the “all in” expense of traveling in an RV and traded it in for our Cherokee Trailhawk. The curious thing is that we have never missed the Merc.

The closest thing to a flat-towable BMW, in my opinion, is a front-drive Mini Cooper with a manual transmission. To find one that will work, you might have to go back several model years. Unfortunately, none of the xDrive BMW vehicles, not even the ones with manual transmissions, can be flat-towed. I wish there weren’t two of them because I do not. A fantastic toad would be the X3.

“No one is allowed to tow your car. So, in the event of a malfunction, get in touch with a service center. Keep the car from being towed Have a load delivered with your car on it

ing platform only; if otherwise, damage could result. The only way to move the car is on a loading platform.”

Towing Capacity of a BMW I3

The 2021 BMW I3’s towing capacity has not yet been recorded in our database. The maximum load that any vehicle can tow without utilizing trailer brakes is 750 kg, provided that it is initially rated to do so. If you wish to know the tow rating in tonnes, merely divide the kilogram value by 1000. Kilograms can alternatively be written as kilos. To make sure that your 2021 BMW I3 corresponds to the example given here, check with the manufacturer or your owner’s manual before attempting to tow with any car, ute, van, SUV, or 4×4.

In Düsseldorf, an electric camper pulled by a BMW i3 shines.

You might remember when Dethleffs’ E.Home electric motorhome was introduced last year. A true mobile solar producing station, the first-of-its-kind all-electric camper could take you well over 100 miles from the city and recharge itself as you camped on the way back. The new towable E.Home Coco mobile trailer has now been added to Dethleffs’ expanding line of eco-friendly and cost-effective products.

The E.Home Coco has a bank of solar panels for on-the-go recharging and power availability, just like its bigger sister. But this tow trailer pulls off a fantastic trick. Because it is self-propelled, the caravan may be transported by smaller, more environmentally friendly vehicles. Dethleffs wants to provide an all electric camping experience, and the Coco can be towed by cars like the BMW i3.

The split axel’s two 40kW motors and an 80kW battery pack, along with a load-limiting tow tongue, result in a maximum towing force for the towing vehicle of just about 220 lb. To pull this puppy, no gas guzzler is required. Electric vehicles will see significantly less range loss when towing the Coco, allowing for a drive to the country and back without experiencing any range anxiety.

The benefits extend beyond the road as well. Those solar panels make it simple to make your morning green juice, and Dethleffs has experimented with gadgets like wireless phone chargers and photoelectric window shades, so going green at the campground probably also means increased comfort. Additionally, an auxiliary program can even use the trailer’s torque vectoring to self-park in a constrained campsite at the touch of a screen.

It’s interesting to note that this tiny trailer has one more trick up its sleeve. The trailer may serve as a solar energy storage device for charging your daily car after it is plugged in at home, further decreasing emissions by keeping electric vehicles off the grid and charged. It can also serve as an emergency power bank in the event of a power outage.

There is still room for development, as Dethleffs intends to significantly lessen the stress on the tow vehicle in the upcoming year in order to increase range and ease strain. The basic version is currently available, and hopefully soon this idea will become a reality on American campgrounds.

A tow bar is an essential piece of gear you’ll need if you want your BMW to travel with you on a road trip in an RV. It evenly distributes loads between your car and the RV and attaches to the tow hook on your BMW. Make sure the one you pick can support more weight than your BMW.

Without a tow bar that has been correctly placed, towing can be dangerous and should never be tried. Even with your BMW’s built-in steering lock, you run the risk of having the vehicle veer in one or the other directions due to slack in the chain that transmits forces as your RV corners. It can possibly obstruct your RV’s travel path.

Even though it’s a little trickier than some cars, traveling with a second car instead of just your toad can open up a whole new world of possibilities for you.

Instead of trying to squeeze your RV through congested city streets, you can park it in a convenient location and then hop in the BMW to explore the area. Heck, along the way, you could even come upon a few pleasant driving highways. At least no BMW owner ever relates tales of carving canyons in a Winnebago.
