According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Michael “The Situation” Sorrentino, widely known for his role on MTV’s “Jersey Shore,” was freed from a federal prison in New York on Thursday.
Sorrentino, 38, was given an eight-month prison term in 2018 for tax evasion along with a $10,000 fine and 500 hours of community service.
After being freed, he shared his first photo on Instagram, which features him inside his house with Lauren, his wife, and Moses, their dog.
The phrase “the comeback is always larger than the setback” is printed on the jersey he is sporting, which is from his online store.
The caption for Lauren’s Instagram post read: “Welcome home, honey. The house don’t fall when the bones are good.”
From 2009 through 2012, Sorrentino appeared on “Jersey Shore,” and in its 2018 spinoff, “Jersey Shore: Family Vacation.”
Members of the cast are seen visiting him in prison in the currently aired season.
Fans congratulated Sorrentino on his release on his verified Instagram page, writing things like “proud and thrilled for you,” “one more day buddy,” and “tomorrow’s the big day,” among other things. Additionally, there are numerous encouraging and inspiring tweets about Sorrentino’s impending release on his wife’s Twitter account.
In response to a 2014 indictment for filing false business and individual tax returns between 2010 and 2012, Sorrentino earlier entered a plea of guilty to tax evasion and hiding income. He was required to pay the IRS $337,693 in restitution as part of his plea bargain, according to court records.
According to the accusation, Sorrentino purposefully failed to disclose the full amount of money received to the accounting firm he employed and instead gave it a list of fictitious or exaggerated business expenses. He filed a bogus US tax return for the year 2011 with the IRS in 2012, knowing it to be false.
According to the 2018 statement from the US Attorney for New Jersey, Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Richard E. Zuckerman, “Lying to and deceiving the federal government is a very serious crime, regardless of a defendant’s celebrity status.”
In regards to Sorrentino’s release, the US Attorney’s office for the District of New Jersey declined to comment.
According to the statement, Sorrentino’s 40-year-old brother Marc received a two-year prison term in 2018 for assisting in the creation of a fake and fraudulent tax return. The date of his release is anticipated to be September 28, 2020.

A Chicago man was found guilty of an elaborate investment fraud scheme.
California – United States Attorney Melinda Haag reported that Michael Steven Banuelos (also known as Ferrari Mike or Mike Banuelos) pleaded guilty today in federal court in San Francisco to operating a three-year investment fraud scam through which he defrauded more than $2 million.
Banuelos acknowledged in his guilty plea that he had misled the business manager of a musical group by claiming to have planned a concert tour during which the musical group would perform as the opening act for a well-known recording artist. Banuelos also presented fraudulent evidence of the supposed arrangement while lying to this business manager about having negotiated a multimillion-dollar contract with a major record company for the rights to the music group. In order to entice further investors to this alleged music agreement and other fictitious deals involving musical performers, Banuelos also used misleading assertions and bogus paperwork. Many of the investors in these alleged transactions resided in the Bay Area.
Banuelos acknowledged that he spent the vast bulk of the $2 million he earned through this scheme—more than $2 million—on personal costs. These costs included reimbursing his ex-wife, paying thousands of dollars in auto loans, and thousands of dollars in dues and membership fees for a country club.
Banuelos also acknowledged that he deceived other people of an additional $217,000 after the music deal hoax concluded. Banuelos misrepresented himself as a successful money manager in connection with this scam, and stated that one client had given him $45 million to invest. More victims sent Banuelos money in the misguided notion that it would be invested on their behalf since Banuelos falsely substantiated these promises as well.
On July 12, 2012, a federal grand jury returned an indictment against Banuelos, 42. Twelve counts of wire fraud under Title 18, United States Code, Section 1343, and one count of money laundering under Title 18, United States Code, Section 1957, were brought against him. He had been living in Chicago for a few months prior to being detained on July 26, 2012. He had previously resided in and around Atlanta, Georgia, before relocating to Chicago. Since his arrest, he has remained in federal jail.
On May 21, 2013, Mr. Banuelos will be sentenced in San Francisco before Judge William H. Alsup. According to Title 18, United States Code, Section 1343, the maximum statutory punishment for committing wire fraud is 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and restitution. However, the court would only impose a term following a conviction after taking the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and the federal law controlling sentence imposition, 18 U.S.C. SS 3553, into account.
Rayneisha Booth is working with Assistant U.S. Attorney Doug Sprague to prosecute the case. The Federal Bureau of Inquiry’s year-long investigation led to the prosecution.
