To experience the full effect, though, you do need to be in the right frame of mind. To alternate between the quiet and loud modes, press the exhaust button on the inside. A bassier and gravellier tone than the typical clean soundtrack is heard when the volume is turned up. It enhances the overrun with some pops and crackles, and we observed that engaging the Sport Plus drive mode released even racier noises. Redline is at 6,800 rpm, and as it fast approaches it, the pitch quickly reaches higher and higher octaves.
Naturally, it sounds much nicer outside than it does inside the cabin. Much of the fury is muffled when you’re in the driver’s seat, leaving you with sounds that are much more commonplace. Although burbles and crackling occasionally turn their backs on the driver, people outside the automobile are enjoying a lot nicer noise than those inside (the same could very much be said of the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid). On high throttle, a few intake whooshes and turbo noises can be heard in the cabin, but you have to be paying close attention to notice them. As things stand, it would be good if Porsche could make the Turbo’s interior more dramatic. Of course, with a turbocharged engine and all the sound deadening that makes the Macan Turbo so serene and quiet on the highway, that might not be conceivable, and we definitely wouldn’t want additional speaker noises. However, the ears of Stelvio Quadrifoglio owners are much happier.
