I love to imagine that Ferrari can develop drivers as well as cars, as Enzo Ferrari once said. This is the basis for the Scuderia Ferrari program, which seeks to hire exceptional young people. On the occasion of the first Scouting Camp, which was conducted in Maranello on October 5th, we met with Marco Matassa, head of the Ferrari Driver Academy, as part of the technical collaboration project initiated with the Ferrari Driver Academy. Together, we learned about the numerous steps that young drivers go through to become single-seater drivers.
Only a select handful actually achieve their dreams. As stated by Marco Matassa, head of the Ferrari Driver Academy, the Maranello team’s nursery of young talents, which has been operating for more than ten years, becoming a Formula One driver or simply a racing driver is a lengthy and difficult process that must be based on one premise: “At the base of it all, there has to be a desire to have fun.”

The Ferrari Driver Academy has announced Callum Ilott and Marcus Armstrong’s futures as well as the nine drivers that will participate in the Scuderia’s junior program for 2022.
Armstrong from New Zealand, who placed 13th in each of his last two F2 seasons, won’t be a member of the FDA in 2022. As a result, Ferrari’s junior lineup will not include any F2 drivers this season.
Ilott has been placed on a “gap year” by Ferrari for 2022 due to his IndyCar commitments, with the Italian automaker stating that “[IndyCar] falls outside the workable framework of the FDA since it would not be able to offer necessary support to the Englishman.”
Oliver Bearman, Rafael Camara, and karter Laura Camps Torras are the newest additions to Ferrari’s program. Oliver Bearman will compete in F3 this season. After Maya Weug, who remains a member of the academy in 2022, the latter joins as the second female FDA member.
Along with Weug and James Wharton, an Australian, Camara is one of three FDA students competing in F4 this season. For 2022, there are two F3 drivers on the roster: Arthur Leclerc and Bearman. Dino Beganovic is the only Formula Regional racer in the Academy.
Mick Schumacher, a Haas F1 driver, and Robert Shwartzman, a Ferrari F1 test driver, both remain with the FDA.
FDA alumni will make up 20% of the F1 grid in 2022, according to Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto. “To succeed like Charles Leclerc, who is about to begin his fourth season of racing for the Scuderia, is the goal for both them and us.

I was astonished to see so few current teams in an old F1 race that a buddy showed me a few weeks ago. Williams, McLaren, and Ferrari were present, but the other teams were entirely different. So I questioned how new teams enter Formula One.

Is there a driver academy at McLaren?
The McLaren Young Driver Programme is a driver development program run by McLaren. It was originally known as the McLaren Driver Development Programme, the McLaren-Mercedes Young Driver Support Programme, and the McLaren-Honda Young Driver Programme. It aims to provide year-by-year advice, support, and endorsement to help talented young racers advance up the motorsports food chain.
Lewis Hamilton, who joined the program while karting and later advanced to the McLaren F1 team, is the most notable participant in the program. In the years since, from 2008 through 2020, he has won the Formula One Drivers’ Championship seven times.
4 drivers have advanced from the program to the McLaren F1 team as of the 2021 season: Lando Norris in 2019, Stoffel Vandoorne in 2016, and Hamilton in 2007.
No drivers participated in the program from 2019 through 2021, which McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown attributed to the team’s “extremely targeted” strategy and its already stable F1 lineup, making it impossible for any new drivers to secure a spot in the sport. Ugo Ugochukwu, an American karting driver, was brought on board the program in March 2021.

How can you enter the F3 racing world?
The FIA F3 European Championship requires an FIA International Race license to participate. Many foreign kart drivers are not immediately qualified for an International Race license due to the structure of the license regulations. To obtain the results, competence, and behaviour deemed sufficient for an International Racing licence, they are often required to compete in other race categories. I was one of a select few kart drivers in 2015 who was qualified for a higher grade International Race license, which allowed me to advance directly to F3 or other international race categories as a result of my achievement in CIK-FIA karting competitions. The MSA (UK ASN) would not have granted me an FIA International Race license allowing me to compete in the TRS in New Zealand or the FIA European F3 series if I hadn’t complied with the criteria listed in Appendix L of the FIA International Sporting Code. On this issue, the MSA were extremely clear.
Successful kart drivers can still meet the requirements for a higher grade FIA International Racing license and compete in a variety of international race categories, according to the license rules for 2016. They just can’t transition from karting to the FIA F3 European Championship using their newly acquired license.
Personally, I’m happy I switched to F3. Without a question, racing with seasoned engineers, drivers, and the F3 equipment has helped me grow and learn a lot. The two drawbacks are that F3 qualifying and race performances were harder to achieve than I had anticipated and that testing is more constrained. But learning happens in that way. In my instance, I placed 12th overall and was the only driver to place in the top 30 in each of the 33 F3 races I competed in in 2015, including a podium finish at the Nurburgring. Due to the new regulation that limits a driver to three seasons, I was fighting against several seasoned drivers at the front of the field who would no longer be eligible to compete in Euro F3. One driver, myself, is appreciative of the chance to compete against these others rather than whining about how unfair it is.
If the ban is to lower crash rates, a smaller grid will be more important than keeping CIK-FIA Championship winning kart drivers on the track. We had a full grid of 34+ drivers the previous season. I think that the size of the grid played a role in some of the incidents last year, and experienced drivers were just as much at fault as anyone else. Certainly, the vast bulk of them cannot be attributed to the new karting racers. The grid size this season is more comparable to that of 2013 and 2014. On average, there ought to be fewer collisions. It’s possible that F3 will deploy a virtual safety car for the first time this season. It’s unknown at this moment how drivers will handle the restarts that result from this, but it should help. This year, it was mandatory for all drivers to take an FIA Training course that covered crucial parts of racing and the duties of an F3 Championship driver. I anticipate some goofy crashes in the upcoming season, hopefully with far less occurrences than in the last one.
